Meet the Collins

Okay...where to begin?

I am an indoors girl and one of my best things ever are novels and movies. I have three best friends, an annoying but loyal younger brother, a cute little sister, a nice and beautiful mom and an asshole for a dad.

"Cass, dinner!" My mom yelled from downstairs.

Oh, and I hate getting up from any of my shows to do something, I don't care if it's the millionth time I'm seeing the show.

Don't get me wrong, I love food but I hate stress and right now I can't think of anything more stressful than peeling myself off my bed where I am comfortably rewatching an episode of Gilmore girls.

Yep, you guessed right I am lazy.

"Cass!" My mom yelled again, I could tell she was frustrated from her tone.

Why?

I am fond of this, not responding when I am called because I'm too engrossed in a book or a movie.

Hey, it's not because I am mean or rude I'd just prefer it if they were robots or something to bring my food up my room, feed me, pick my clothes, tidy my room and all that jazz.

"Don't joke with me Cassandra, I'll take your laptop if I come up there." She yelled again.

"Coming mom, just ten minutes till I'm done with this episode." I replied.

"Cassandra." My dad's heavy voice boomed through the house.

Oh he's here? Great, never thought I'll have dinner with him again.

Michael Collins aka my dad is a neurosurgeon in the best hospital in the arena which is a big town about four hours drive from ours so I see my dad once a month or twice if we're lucky. It's suffice to say I grew up without dad but with his money.

I pushed myself off the bed and stomped downstairs, the whole family was there already and the vein on my mom forehead looked as if it was gonna burst if I hadn't arrived then.

Again, don't get me wrong, it's not like I like getting her worked up, it's just that I am a teenager and in my opinion, teenagers are meant to push their parents buttons once in a while and since like I said, I am kinda like a couch potato so I do it by being a couch potato, atleast I don't come home drunk every Friday or with detention slips every week like my brother.

I'm better right? Nah we're the same.

"Hey," I said as I took my seat beside River, my younger brother who due to reasons I'll really like to bring up to the table with God is bigger than me in every physical way.

My mom rolled her eyes, my younger sister, Aurora, simply smiled showing off the food in her mouth and went back to her meal of mashed potatoes and gravy, River nudged my shoulder and my dad said, "you should really learn to be on time for your meals, Cassandra."

You see my problem with this man?

First, he's never at home then when he is he's always being formal and strict, I honestly cannot have a conversation with him for up to ten minutes.

Yes I know I was wrong by being late and stuff and I didn't apologize but in my defense I was busy.

Okay maybe I wasn't but cut me some slack I was rewatching Gilmore girls. Okay, not a good excuse but the thing is I.... nah, who am I kidding?

The truth is I've never been close to my dad and as I grew up we kinda drifted apart especially due to the fact that he's never around and he just kinda pick up faults in whatever I say or do and vice versa.

What kind of dad is it that behaves formal with his children, I considered leaving the table but he won't even be know that it's because of our relationship (or lack of), rather I'll receive a lecture on etiquette and all the stress will fallback on mom plus I love food, I'm not giving it up for anyone. Not today. Never.

I piled my plate with what will make most of the cheerleaders at school more ashamed of me than the already are and ate. The table was silent, mom was mad or she'd have started a conversation, River looked like he had somewhere to be at and he was in a hurry, did I mention it was a school night? Aurora was just being her and was contented playing with her food and dad, well he think it's the right table manners not to speak at the table.

He's right but still.

As soon as we were done, I packed the dishes. It was River's turn to do the dishes but as soon as I heard, "sweet sister!" I knew I'd be the one doing it.

"What, River." I asked, putting my hands on the hip.

"Can't I call my sister?" He asked already faking a wounded face.

"Cut the crap, River." I demanded, still keeping my hard stance.

What, you've gotta be tough to these kids nowadays.

"I'm supposed to meet up with Andy and the guys now, can you please help me do the dishes, please?" He said hurriedly.

"Nope."

"Cass please."

"You do realize that you'd have gotten a headstart with the dishes by now if you were doing them." I said as I made my way up the stairs but he blocked me, "please, I'll pay you in some other way."

"No parties at home the next time mom's out of town." I said.

In case you can't milk it out, River throws a party every time, I literally mean, every time mom's not at home and like I said, dad's never. I don't have a problem with parties, I have a problem with hosting them. Horny teenagers in your rooms doing God-knows-what, red party cups everywhere, drunks messing up your stuff, once someone watered our flowers with ruffle oil and I hate cleaning up especially after parties.

He looked bummed for a second before he smiled, "deal."

"Oh and when you call me to pick up your drunk ass, you'll have to do another favour."

Anyone read the cellphone swap by Lindsey Summers? Remember how Keely used to pick her brother's drunk ass up? That's almost same with me except that I ALWAYS get something back in return.

"I'm not drinking tonight." He said as he went towards the door.

I sang, "that's what you always say..."

Going back to the dining room, I packed every dish from the table and they were too many for me to carry at once. Now a sensible person will carry the amount he/she can but I decided to take them all as the three- metres-away kitchen seemed like it was in Mars.

Grabbing everything and spinning on my foot, a bowl immediately fell  and broke.

One.

Two.

Three.

"Cassandra, what are you breaking in my kitchen."

"Nothing mom." I yelled back.

Stepping around the broken mess which mom was going to clean because I can't be bothered anymore than I already have been, I went to the sink to quickly wash the dishes and go back to my date with Gilmore girls and Nutella.

🌤️
