CHAPTER 2: BEING HUMAN

Nat's POV

"Looks like I've got loads of work to do," I mutter to myself and groan at the sight in front of me.

The whole house of mine is a mess.

The sheets are lying around, the curtains are torn and there are stains of blood everywhere.

Not exactly my type of welcome.

I regret not taking Gina's help when she said she could help me clean the house.

"Still gotta proof check it," I say and pull out my gun and step inside the house.

I look for any sign of movement.

There shouldn't be any as no one has lived here for a while now.

A movement in the corner catches my eye and I turn around to see who made the noise.

I raise my gun and move forward with caution.

Something moves again and I try my best to make out who it is from a safe distance.

The person who's trying to hide clearly isn't doing his or her job well and is miserably failing.

I pull off the sheet on the couch and find a person sleeping on it.

Woah.

I poke the body with my gun and the person turns around and it is-

"Alejandro?" I exclaim and my voice gets stuck in my throat.

Alejandro happens to be an old frenemy of mine. Though we never actually talked ourselves. He happened to be the right-hand man of my ex-boyfriend.

What the hell is he doing here?

What should I do?

I look at the gun in my hand and sigh.

There is no there way.

Alejandro stirs in his sleep, mumbles something about a fight and opens his eyes.

"Welcome to Earth," I whisper and I'm not sure if he hears me.

His eyes widen in horror the moment he sees me and jumps from the bed.

"What the hell?" I say and point my gun at him.

He looks like he's going to fall down because of fear anytime.

"I-I can ex-explain. D-Don't sh-shoot me," he stutters and my anger suddenly turns into pity.

"Why are you here?" I ask him and pocket my gun.

His shoulders relax when I do that and he takes a breath of relief.

"I'm here to take care of you," he says calmly.

"What?" I ask him.

Take care of me?

What bullshit.

No one needs to take care of me, I'm better off alone.

I always have been.

"Do not lie to me Alejandro," I say through gritted teeth.

"I'm not. I was ordered to come here," he says and looks down at his feet.

Oh?

"By Leo?" I hesitantly ask him.

"No"

"Then who?"

"By the new leader of our clan," he says and looks at me straight in the eye.

"New leader?"

When did this happen?

"Yeah, Leo kind of gave up his position as the leader and let his cousin take over the clan," he says with a hint of remorse in his tone.

Why would Leo do that?

His clan was everything to him.

Well, not exactly everything but it did mean a lot to him.

"So the new leader asked you to be here?" I ask him and try to remain as neutral as possible. I can't let him know how much this piece of information has affected me.

How my heart breaks into pieces at the mention of Leo's name.

How sad all of this makes me.

How sad all of this is.

I shouldn't go there.

"Yeah he did," Alejandro says and starts moving back and forth.

"Why? Doesn't he know who I am?" I ask him.

"Yes, he does. He knows about you and Leo--" he says and I suck in a harsh breath.

"Leo's in pain too--" Alejandro starts to say but I cut him off by saying, "I'm not. Continue."

He looks at me questionably but continues anyway, "He wants you to be safe because Leo and he were close. Like super close and it breaks his heart to see his best friend in so much pain--"

"Best friend? I thought he was a cousin?"

"Well, they're best friends and cousins. Just like you and Sophie--"

"Sophie and I despise each other," I say angrily and he huffs in reply.

Alejandro liked Sophie and he wasn't really quiet about it. He didn't stop sending her gifts till she sent him a death threat.

The situation was oddly amusing and would have been more fun if he hadn't backed away.

"Anyways, I'm supposed to be here," he says with a smile

"And do what? Protect me?" I say with a smirk and his smile falters.

"I think I mentioned that a hundred times," he says cheekily.

"How can you protect me when you're the one who needs protection," I say and step forwards towards him.

"I-I?" he stutters and moves backwards.

"Yes, you. When I asked you did that leader know how I am you said yes, but does he? Do you?" I say and keep stepping forward till our toes are almost touching.

"Leo and you--"

"Not Leo and me you dumbass. Do you know who I am?"

"I don't--"

"I'm the leader of the very clan your clan fears of and is terrified to cross. Do you know who I am now?"

"But how--" he asks.

"Looks like your leader doesn't spill the beans, does he?" I ask him and he gulps in return.

"I'll repeat my question again. How can you save me when you and your clan is the one who needs saving?"

"I don't--"

I take out my gun and point at him.

"Never come to an enemy's house like this. Looks like your 'leader' wants you dead, should I just do the needsome?" I say with a smirk and his face turns white as a ghost.

I move my hand to pull the trigger but stop and point the gun at his head.

Guilt hits me and I try not to dwell on it much.

If people can mercilessly just pull the trigger of the gun then so can I.

"So can I," I say to myself and look Alejandro straight in the eyes and see fear in them.

I'm a monster.

"Aren't you human?" he asks me with a pleading look in his eyes.

"If I wasn't, do you think I'd be doing this?" I ask him and smirk at him.
