Chapter Nine - Sharing Cake

HAILEY'S POV

Even though Adian agreed with me, he had a disbelieving expression in his eyes, before we could say anything, my waiter approached our table, "would you like anything else" he asks, smiling at me.

I pulled my hands quickly from under Adian's, embarrass, because this is the first time a stranger touched my hands, a guy who isn't , Mr. Knox or some other elder at the home.

"I'm good, thanks" I answered, looking across to my new friend. "Need anything else?" I ask politely, still flustered.

Grinning, "actually there is something, I'm just not sure if goes against the policy of your establishment" he says, already capturing the interest of the waiter.

Realizing what he was about to request, "wait" I stopped him, reaching out to grab his hand, but he just turned to me, smiling mischievously. What a sight.

"So it's my friend's birthday and she has a cake," pointing to the bag near him. "She wants to share a slice with me, before I leave for work, but," shrugging his shoulders, as I covered my face with both hands, in embrrassment. "She didn't want to offend you by asking," he explains. "But me, I want a slice. Can you help out a red velvet lover?" he charmingly requested.

Smiling widely, "of course, of course, I'll be right back" he happily agreed, walking away.

Turning his attention back to me, "that was a piece of cake" he chuckles.

"Your favorite cake?" I asks laughing with him.

The waiter returned with two saucers, two forks, extra napkins and a knife. "This should do the trick" he says laying the items on the table. "Let me know when you're ready" he says to Adian, adding, "happy birthday miss" before walking away.

Seeing that I made no attempt to do anything, Adian took the cake out, opened it, sliding it across to me, "do the honors" he smiled.

Picking up the knife, I cut a slice, placing it in a saucer, handing it to Adian. "Happy birthday to me' I whisper softly.

"Happy birthday to you" he whispers softly, as I cut a slice for myself.

"Hmm" closing my eyes, allowing the taste to flow through every fiber in my body.

Opening my eyes as I swallow the last piece, I saw Adian staring at me, his Adam's apple going up and down, with a pained expression covering his face.

Raising my eyebrows I looked at him questioning.

Shaking his head as the waiter approached our table again. "We'll have our bills combined please," Adian requested.

"Yes sir" the waiter responded, while I dug into my handbag for my wallet. I took out a card and in the process took out cash to give for excellent service tip.

Reaching out to stop me, "it's my treat" he says, next one's on you" he said hopefully.

Giving him an encouraging grin, "I'll tip them" I compromise.

As the waiter returned with the bill, Adian hands over his card, will I give him a generous tip himself and the waitress.

Grinning like he saw Christmas, walking away to make the payment.

Raising his eyebrows, "that's a huge tip for the waitress" Adian observed.

Chuckling shyly, "well she is the reason that we met" I explained.

"Yep, you're right about that, I should top up on your tip" he says.

The waiter returned with Adian's card and our paid bill, leaving again wishing me a happy birthday.

Ad if on cue, Adian's phone rang, "f**k", he mutters.

"Yea" he answered abruptly.

Listening for a moment, before I heard that enticing sound of him chuckling, at whoever's on the other end.

"Yep, all signed away" he stopped and continued listening.

"Mother summoned me, so I missed the most important meal of the day. I stopped for coffee and birthday cake" he explains, smiling at me.

Listening to his caller, "okay, make an excuse, I'll be there soon." he chuckles hanging up.

"Your boss?" I asked curious.

"Technically yes, but he's also my uncle. If it was my boss, you'd hear him swearing from there. he grimaces.

Smiling, because I would be part of a work force soon.

"I can't wait to start working" I blurted out happily.

"You've gotten a job already?" he asks curious.

"Uh em uh, well I sent out lots of resumes out of college. but the only responses I've gotten so far is from out of state. I heard today, actually that the company my late father worked for, offered me a job." I shared.

"Smiling at me, " that's great. What's the name of the company? " he asks, seemingly happy for me.

I didn't know. 'Goodness, I didn't ask" I said. tapping my forehead as he laughs.

"This is embarrassing, I was offered a job and I didn't ask anything else because I was so happy." I explained flustered.

Looking at his time, "I gotta go hand in the documents to my supervisor, but I can drop you off at home or somewhere" he asks hopefully.

Wanting to go, but knowing this morning was a dream, "I have some errands to run before clocking in, so" I finished of shrugging my shoulders.

"okay, but I'm dropping you somewhere, at least" he insisted.

"Okay, the supermarket" I agreed reluctantly. Wanting this meeting to end yet wanting it to prolong.

"Okay" he agrees.

Getting up, I put the cake back in the bag, organizing to leave together.

Walking out I wave to my waiter as my eyes met the eyes of the waitress, she gave me a small smile. I nodded smiling as I walked out with Adian.

Leading me up the street, I frowned seeing him turn into a alley, stopping abruptly. Observing that I stopped. he turned to look at me confused. As if realizing why I stopped, he chuckles again, making me melt.

"It's the only parking available" he says, only then did I notice the few cars parked there.

Feeling foolish, I followed him to his car.
