Chapter Twenty Four - Half Truth of Lies

ADIAN'S POV

"What?" I asked. She already has a date? Good for her, but Clyde is F**k em and leave 'em kinda guy. A lot like me. That's who I am. What I am.

Giving me a weird look, "the new girl in legal? duh." he chuckles.

The doors opened on that, as I stepped out on the legal floor, "see yuh! Have fun!" I say walking away.

"I'm getting laid man" he shouts as I walk off extremely upset. She is really a slut, she's definitely spending the night elsewhere and wanted to rope me in. What the f**k? She wants a threesome. My wife's into kinky?

Walking announced into Jerry's office, I slammed my lunch container down on the table where we eat. Going to his kitchen taking out two beers, popping them open, I walked back to his sitting area and started eating my lunch.

"Two beers?" Jerry asked coming to sit opposite me, picking up one.

"Hey" I said with a mouthful of spaghetti, very cold spaghetti.

Getting straight to the point, "scarface?" I quizz.

Leaning back sipping the beer, "there a little girl at the children's home, Emmy. She's six and came to the home after being abuse. Her stepfather is Ellis" he says.

"Scarface?" pausing to look at him, as my chest tightened, "what type of abuse?" I ask, knowing that I don't really want to know.

"Rape" Jerry blurts out emotionally affected.

I heard the sound of a bottle smashing against the wall. only to realize it was me. It's my broken bottle scattered on the floor behind Jerry.

"What else?" I waited angrily.

"Um, Hailey befriended Emmy when the police place her in the system. They've been inseparable since. Hailey would take her to spend weekends. She invested time and money to help Emmy deal with the trauma." he explains, pausing to breathe.

"And" I coax him.

With slumped shoulders, he lifted his head draining the beer bottle, putting the bottle quietly on the table.

"Hailey would spend weekends back and forth, helping at the home. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Soup Kitchens. Everything to help the kids, Hailey was, is still involved" he paused, while I wait to see where this goes.

"Hailey was attacked on her way home one evening and it was Ellis." he said as I stood up and started to pace in his office, running my hands through my already untidy hair.

"He tried to rape her, he didn't succeed by she was badly hurt. The self defence classes she started taking as a teenager saved her" he said with tears running down his eyes.

"Some guys going home from playing basketball ball in park, heard her screams and ran to help her." shaking his head as he remembered.

I'm ready to choke the f***ring lights out of him, before it clicked. "How do you know all this" I observe him suspiciously.

Shaking his head he stood up turning his back towards me as he stares at the broken glass scattered on his carpet.

Turning back to face me, "After her father... uh.. well your father hired security to look out for her, but that evening they failed. They failed her. She still has nightmares, but she stop talking, she's more locked into herself. Actually I was shock when she threw herself into your arms earlier. I spoke to Ryan and we've put security back on her" he says.

"Her father will never forgive us if anything happens to her. She's all he has left" he mutters softly.

Staring at him shocked, "what did you say?" I asked, still not believing what I heard.

As he looks at me with a blank expression. "Nothing" he shakes his head.

Going to his desk to call his secretary, "call maintenance my office" he says hanging up.

Still looking at him! Unbelievable! "Is her father still alive?" I ask without flinching.

"No" he shakes his head staring me eyes wavering.

He's f***ing lying. Turning on my heels I stormed out of his office and he didn't even call me back. I know he's lying and he'll be calling my father now. If my father calls, then I know something is up.

Does my mother know about this? I have a f***ing feeling that she does.

Why is Hailey getting to me? I promise to keep her at arms length and all these things I heard makes my heart ache for her.

To top it off, she has a sleep over with Clyde. With all that she's been through, how does casual affairs fit in her life? What am I suppose to do?

Walking towards the elevator, I bumped into Clyde again and there's no way to run.

"Hey man, do you know where Hailey Sullivan's office is?" Clyde asks annoyed.

"Ask the receptionist" I responded as the elevator doors open.

"What time did she say to pick her up" I ask hoping she didn't make arrangements with him.

Embarrass, he looks down, "I'm now here to invite her" he shrugs.

Smiling with this news, "FYI, she's in a relationship" I said as the door started closing.

"Wait, what?" Clyde holds the door running in to join me.

"She didn't have a ring on" he used as an excuse.

Feeling cornered, "I'm not at liberty to say" I told him as I punch in the basement number.

Clyde kept rambling on, but my thoughts were elsewhere. It is on the the beautiful girl who is now my wife.

The elevator doors opened in the basement, ad I stepped out "so what is it man" Clyde still talking taps me on the shoulder.

Frowning, "what is what?" I ask as I continue walking away.

"You and the beautiful Ms. Sullivan?" he ask, clearly upset.

Turning angrily at him. " Listen man, I have no idea what you're rambling on about. I have things to do and you have a days work still to complete, so get on with it and keep me out of your love life " I snapped at him, dialing a number on my phone as he continues to follow me.

"Hello?" Basil answered on the first ring.

"Basil I need to see you ASAP" I said into the phone.

"Where" was the quick response of my best friend and my trusted head of security.

"My place" I said hanging up. I didn't feel comfortable with Clyde walking beside me, listening to my conversation.

"God, I'm hungry" I said mostly to myself.

Reaching my car, I wave Clyde off. "See you tomorrow man" I say to an annoyed Clyde.
