Chapter Two Hundred - Unknown Caller

Adian has been asleep since I got home from the office.

I didn't even know he was at home, much less sick until Emmy met me at the door, jumping up and down. Grabbing my hands she dragged me upstairs where Adian slept.

Emmy and I have been hovering over him all evening, since he fell asleep fully clothed after returning from wherever he went to after absenting himself from the board meeting.

Emmy relayed everything that occurred since Adian return home, upset that he was to sick to even say hello her.

After putting Emmy to bed, I undressed Adian before going down for a quick dinner, which I missed since I wanted to be there in case he woke up.

Pulling my dinner out of the oven, I shoved Adian's dinner back inside.

"Put that in the refrigerator, because he won't be eating dinner tonight," Basil suggests from the open doorway.

Nodding, I followed his advice, since he's been with Adian through more migraines than me.

"Even through I don't have to say it, but thank you for taking care of him," I told Basil as I sat down with my dinner in front of me, just staring at the vegetables and grilled chicken.

I quickly covered the dish, ready to put it in the refrigerator with Adian's.

"Trust me, I won't advise that" Basil says taking the chair opposite me, opening the beer in his hand.

As I opened my mouth to object, Basil shut me down, "like I said, trust me. With your husband under the weather up there," Basil points upwards, while speaking, "he would expect me to make sure you're eating well" Basil explains. "And failing to take care of my brother's wife is not an option." He chuckles, walking across to the refrigerator returning with a bottle of water, placing it in front of me.

I started picking at the vegetables, bit by bit, suddenly lifting my eyes to find Basil staring at me with an unreadable expression in his eyes.

"What brought on Adian's migraine?" I asked slowly, "I mean the last time it happened, he was upset about something with his mother." I said, reverting my eyes to the plate in front of me, wondering what did Ameila do to give my husband, a migraine.

Shrugging, Basil just took sips of his beer, before turning to me, his eyes dark and thoughtful.

"He went to his meeting alone." Basil said in between sips, "he hasn't spoken about his meeting, so I honestly have no idea what brought it on." Basil explains, with a nonchalant smile.

"Where did he go for his meeting?" I probed curiously. "I mean it had to be important for him to leave this morning's meeting, a meeting he called." I retorted, not expecting Basil to say anything about Adian's whereabouts earlier today.

Chuckling to myself, smiling mischievously at Basil, "so did the orchestra send you downstairs again today?" I laughed.

Laughing along with me, "nah the music hasn't started yet," Basil admits, "I just wanted to check on the both of you," Basil explains his reason for being in the kitchen.

"And taking a drink" I added, eying the beer bottle in his hand.

Chuckling, he nodded, "yeah, I felt a bit thirsty on way way downstairs." He agreed, with his eyes on my plate, "now eat up," he advises, while he help himself to another beer.

I cleaned up after I was done with dinner, even thought Basil volunteer to do it, before leaving Basil in the kitchen, to check on Emmy. After a quick shower I joined Adian in bed, restless with a nagging feeling that something happened and it was important.

With Adian still sound asleep, my mind wandered off to this morning's meeting, where Amelia appeared to be inwardly seething at me for mentioning to the board, that someone purposely sent Ellis Clarke after me at the Mall.

I'm aware Ameila isn't going to take that in stride and she'll retaliate against me, but all I want is to keep Adian out of the way.

I quickly jumped out of bed when I heard the sound of Adian's phone's ringing, since I didn't want the noise adding to his headache.

The phone was still in his pants pocket, so I quickly retrieved it and walked towards the bathroom to answer it softly.

"Hello?" I whispered to the unknown caller.

There was a long pause after a bit of shuffling on the other end, before someone answered.

"Uh yes, hello" a strong male voice with an unsteady tone finally answered on the other end.

I froze!

I couldn't respond immediately, so I wait for the caller to speak, because for some reason, I couldn't open my mouth.

"Goodnight, I am sorry to be calling this late, but is Adian available?" The called asked politely.

I don't know why but there was something in the man's voice, that jolted me.

"Uh hello, ma'am?" The caller says from the other end. "Is Adian available, or do you want me to call him tomorrow?" The caller continued.

Who is this man and why does his voice have such a familiar tone?

"I'm sorry, but my husband is asleep" I conveyed to the caller, but I had to know. I had to ask. "Who am I speaking to?" I asked softly.

I heard the sudden intake of the caller's breath.

"You're Hailey Knights, Adian's wife?" The caller asked and I am suddenly afraid, even though I don't know why.

"Who am I speaking to?" I whispered again, leaning against the bathroom door watching my sleeping husband.

After a soft chuckle, "I am sorry for calling at this ungodly hour and scaring you." The caller says, "please let your husband know that the gentleman from the office he visited earlier today called and I will call again." The caller responded politely.

Why is he being so evasive?

With a light chuckle, "I am sorry for being this intrusive. I never ask for names of Adian's callers" I stared to say. "In fact I have no idea why I am asking who you are." I continued whispering. "I am so sorry, Mr. uh?" I paused waiting for him to fill in the blanks, but he chuckled softly.

"Relax little chatterbox"
