As Hailey hugged me in the elevator, on our way down to the carpark, I saw Bas eyes on her, his expression unreadable.
Hailey's not the PDA type, so she either wants something or she's afraid of something.
I haven't had time to discuss yesterday's board meeting with her, because I need to meet with the first person on David Sullivan's list and I need to do that today.
"You're going out again?" Hailey suddenly asks as the elevator doors opened to the carpark, where we'll be going our separate directions to start our morning.
I'm anxious to bring everything out in the open, but I am not ready to share everything with Hailey, until her father gives me the okay too.
Again Bas turns and gives her a suspicious look and I frown at him, but he just nods to the vehicle in which he and I will be travelling in today again.
I haven't briefed him in on anything that transpired yesterday, but I will when we get to the privacy of his vehicle.
"Yeah, I have too, but I should be back early." I responded smoothly. "I have some follow up work to do for a client" I explained and she smiled up at me, watching me cautiously.
"Oh! Is it the same client from yesterday morning?" She asks causally, but I sense an anxious undertone in her voice.
"Uh, yeah, the same one" I admitted, squeezing the front of my head with my thumb and index finger, as I try to erase the slight throb in my forehead.
Touching my arm to stop me, "are you okay?" Hailey asks anxiously.
Removing my hand from my head, I pulled her towards me, "I'm good." I assured her, "this morning's meeting won't take long, we'll have lunch together, just you and I" I promised, twitching my eyes, as the slight throb increases.
Slapping my arm, "stop lying. You're in pain" she says angrily and I chuckle as I rubbed the area of my arm that she slapped. She's really tough!
"We'll be late!" Mel shouts out as they all stood at their respective vehicles.
Kissing Hailey's upturned pout, "I've got Bas, so you have nothing to worry about." I reassured her again, turning her gently towards the vehicle Ger is driving.
Ensuring Hailey's secured, I tapped the hood of the vehicle waving as Ger pulled out of the carpark with Mel and Hailey, leaving Bas and I alone.
"Where to?" Bas asks, while unlocking the vehicle for us.
"Carlton Knox's office," I responded tersely because I need to ensure the paperwork my mother has set in motion though Knox, will be cancelled and I must stop it today, since we have already behind in our application to stop the transactions mom has in motion.
I still haven't enlightened Bas on what occurred at the State Pen yesterday and I don't know where to start, but I decided to start at the beginning, from where David Sullivan refused to see me.
By the time Bas pulled along the curb in front of Knox's office, I had already filled a shock Bas in on almost everything I could remember, for now.
"I'll see you a bit." I said, climbing out of the vehicle and without a backward glance, I walked towards into the lobby and straight to the elevator that was more than half full at this time of the morning, when most people are starting their day.
The slight pain in my head increased but I was determined to make this meeting and whatever follow ups I have to do, ensuring Hailey's inheritance stays intact.
I walked out the elevator on Knox's floor, rubbing my head when I heard a light chuckle ahead of me.
"Yes, the elevator in the mornings gives you a headache." The middle aged woman sitting at a desk in front of Knox's office smile at me politely, before her eyes widen in surprise. "Mr. Knights" she smiles happily, "it's so good to finally see you." She walks around her desk, her hand outstretched to greet me. "How's my sweetheart?" She asks as I shook her hand, with slight frown.
"Uh, sweetheart?" I asked slightly confused.
"She means your wife," a heavy voice chuckles behind me, wiping the smile off my face.
Forcing myself to be polite, I tried giving Knox's secretary, the warmest smile I could muster.
"Hailey's fine," I responded, genuinely happy at the thought of Hailey. "She's supposed to be a work," I smiled at the woman whose name I still don't know.
Turing to the side of her where Knox stood at his open office door, "I won't keep you back, you can go in and I'll see you before you leave." Knox's secretary said nodding to Knox, before returning to her seat behind her desk.
I followed Knox into his office, as my anger returns at this man whose involved in an plot to rob my wife of her inheritance.
"This is not a social call, " I muttered angrily, dragging a chair to take a seat in front of the long dark wooden desk in front of me.
"Yes, have a seat will you," Knox mockingly invites me, moving to sit behind his desk.
Knox took a seat on his dark brown executive office chair and smiles at me, "to what do I owe this honor?" Knox continues speaking to me in a mocking tone.
Shrugging, "well for one thing, I am not here for you to bullshit with me." I barked, watching Knox's eyes widen in surprise at my outburst.
Leaning forward with his elbows on his desk, "okay, just tell me why you're here and then you can get the f**k out of my office." Knox retorted impatiently.
With a smug smile, "I need to you to stop the claims my mother has in court to steal my wife's inheritance." I informed him bluntly, watching his eyes widen in shock. "Yeah I know all about it and her plans to have Hailey deem incompetent in order to get everything Sullivan left for his daughter into hers and my sister's greddy hands." I continued angrily, as Knox sat back, his impatience gone and replaced by a guarded expression.
