Chapter One Hundred and Fourteen - Fighting for Independence

I picked at the lunch Mrs. Harris prepared for Emmy but instead of making the long trip upstairs, I use the downstairs bathroom to freshen up, changing into another comfortable PJ's Adian brought down for me.

Refusing his help for the first time in many days, I showered and comb my hair, keeping my face fresh and clean, free from makeup.

Mrs. Harris kept me company while Adian and Caleb continued working in his downstairs office, after Caleb got a phone call which seem to throw him off. I notice he tried in a very subtle way to get Adian's attention to the call. Even though I observed, for some reason I wasn't curious anymore.

I watched Mrs. Harris, prepared meat and vegetables for another day. She asked me to help, when normally she would shoo me out of the kitchen when I offer my help, but I also understand that this her way of helping me recover from my losses.

It's going in seventeen years since I lost both my parents. One was murdered and the other under mysterious circumstances. I wish I was strong enough to continue seeking information concerning my father on my own, but I'm not and Adian is already stressed out as it is, dealing with me.

Leaving the uncut vegetables, I stood up. "I'm tired" I told Mrs. Harris who looked at me in surprise but nods.

Her eyes flew towards the doorway, "are you going back upstairs now?" She asks gently, "Emmy's going to be home soon, you should wait to see her." Mrs. Harris adds and I frown.

"Home?" I whispered, frowning.

Mrs. Harris looked away quickly, her eyes blinking nervously.

"Uh," she says then paused. "I mean you're here right?" She turns to me smiling and I nod, still frowning. "She loves you and wherever you are, will be home to her." Mrs. Harris explains still leaving me confused.

"Okay," I whispered. walking towards the sink. "Adian's downstairs, I will be in the sitting room, taking a rest." I told her while rinsing my hands.

As I walked out the kitchen, I stopped to stared at the girl whose reflection I see in the glass of the built in kitchen cabinet.

Smiling, back at her, happy she got out of the mirror, just like I got out of the room. Crossing the hallway, I turn to look at the staircase as fear slowly creeps in.

I ran back into the kitchen, "Mrs. Harris," I called quickly, causing her to drop the knife in her hands and rush to meet me.

Frowning, "what is it?" She asks quickly, grabbing my arms gently, "do you want me to get Adian for you?" She continued, already looking over my shoulder.

Shaking my head, because I am determined to do this on my own. As much as I feel lost without Adian, he has a life which I am keeping him from, but he just won't go.

"Uh no." I responded, "I just wondered if you could." I paused realizing it is my responsibility to help myself too.

"I was wondering if I could furnish one of the bedrooms downstairs?" I continued when her eyes widen in surprise. "I mean when Adian is working in his office, I could stay downstairs for the day," I explained. "I mean I won't have to go up and down the stairs." Tilting my head with a frown, hoping she understands, that I don't want to use the stairway anymore.

With a small smile she nods.

"I will start working on that from tomorrow and in the meantime you could go online and order your new bedroom furniture." She suggests.

Online! I haven't been online since... "Yeah, okay," I agreed, "but my laptop," I looked around since I don't ever use it in the bedroom. "Have you seen it?" I asked.

Walking away, Mrs. Harris opened one of the cabinet draws taking out my laptop and charger.

"Thank you," I took it from her feigning an excitement I didn't feel and walked into the sitting room to start shopping, even though I have not zeal to do it.

Actually I have no zeal to do anything, but if I don't want to keep trotting up and down the stairs, I will have to furnish the bedroom downstairs, keeping Adian's taste in mind.

Realizing the laptop was fully charged, I curled up on the single sofa and started surfing the web, ignoring all of the emails notifications since most of it would be work related the balance, junk.

I continued making notes of the different sites and the different bed and sets to share with Adian, that is, if he wants to stay downstairs with me.

Since Emmy seem to be staying here, I searched for some toys and learning devices for her, but I didn't have my credit card with me and I didn't want to come back to the site to surf again, because I have zero tolerance for anything.

Adian should have his card on him or he could get mines from upstairs.

As I walked closer towards his office door which he conveniently left open for me, I heard the television running. Confused because they are supposed to be working but they are listening to the afternoon news report, by the sound of it.

Guess I won't be bothering them, I thought as I was about to the push the door open wider, the words coming out of the mouth of the reporter, stopped me in my tracks.

"....SHOCKED THE NATION EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON. A CASE THAT WAS HEARD IN THE APPEAL COURT, OF A SELF CONFESSED MURDERER, WHO AFTER SIXTEEN YEARS DECIDES TO COME BEFORE THE COURT TO CLAIM HIS INNOCENCE.

"Daddy?" My eyes on the screen.
