The drive to the restaurant where Bas and Mel are waiting for us was only twenty minutes away but the deafening silence in the vehicle made it longer.
If Emmy wasn't present, I would've done more than return my membership to what I once believe was the most prestigious Gym in the city but after the receptionist refused to stand up for my wife and our daughter, against that racist, leaving peacefully was my only option.
It was only when the receptionist saw me, that he made a stammering attempt to fix the situation but it was too late. I had already witnessed it all!
I didn't even wish him good luck when I heard the grumbling and saw the disappointed expressions on the faces of members who were coming in or leaving the gym on a busy Saturday morning.
Hailey's no longer angry but she appeared deep in thoughts. I kept taking peeks at her and Emmy in the back seat.
Emmy herself wasn't very talkative either which is definitely a first. How much of what Emmy overheard did she understand?
Smiling to myself, a part of me wished I could've seen Hailey kick that bitch's skinny ass, as she called her but then again, teaching Emmy to fight is another thing or, maybe not.
"Ladies, we're here,"I announced, pulling up in front of a valet, already opening my door while the valet walked around on the other side to open Hailey's.
Nodding, We greeted the doorman and then the hostess, who greeted me first with a smile. Over the years this gym was a regular meetup on Saturdays with a few of the guys.
"Mr. Knights" the hostess greeted me pleasantly, nodding slightly then frowns when her eyes move to my very dressed down wife, the edges of her mouth twitching as she struggles to keep a polite smile in place.
Hailey on the other hand stared at her with a blank expression but I knew after what occurred at the gym, pissing her off now, won't end well.
"Is there a problem?" I asked politely, ready to take my leave if I have to.
Shaking her head quickly, her polite smile in place, "no, no sir," the hostess quickly responded, "your table's ready and your other party is already seated." Taking up some menus, the hostess walked ahead of us.
Turning around, Hailey smirk at what just occurred and I couldn't help but laugh, grabbing Emmy's hand while making our way through the tables.
"This" I eye her exposed body parts, "look, does attract a lot of attention." I laugh
Elbowing me lightly, "it's comfortable," she chimes in, as he approached Mel and Bas, whose smiling as if he's had more than a few, already.
Are we that late?
Nodding with the same polite plastered smile, the hostess motions for us to sit before handing us a menu each.
It was a round table, so Mel was quick to draw Emmy closer to her, leaving Hailey and I to sit beside each other which works for me.
"A waiter will be with you shortly," the hostess said, nodding slightly before walking away.
Curling his lips downwards, "what's with her?" Bas asks causally, flicking his eyes to the retreating hostess.
"She didn't approve of my style of dressing," Hailey piped in causally before I could respond.
Laughing loudly, Bas nudges Mel, who rolls her eyes at him before turning to Hailey and Emmy. Taking out his phone, Bas laughs even more, irritating Mel.
"You promised to behave," she warned him but he shook his head and kept laughing while searching on his phone for something, he must find hiliarous.
Sliding his phone to Hailey, "you're totally dressed for the badass mother part," he jokes while I leaned closer to Hailey to see what he opened for her to watch.
"Language Bas," Mel chides him for using the A-word in the presence of Emmy.
Finally Emmy spoke since leaving the Gym.
Her innocent face lifted to Mel's, "but Hailey call the lady," Emmy paused while Hailey and I looked up from the video that already has us shocked, to hear Emmy out. Without batting an eye, Emmy continued. "Uh, dry ass" Emmy finished happy with herself for remembering.
Hailey's mouth opened in shock but the words couldn't come out while I fought bursting out into laughter but Bas couldn't contain himself.
His body shaking with laughter he stands up and walks away while other patrons smiling at his antics.
Sliding Bas phone towards me, Hailey covers her mouth in embarrassment.
"It's from the Gym" she says looking around nervously.
Mel leans across and taps Hailey's hand gently. "Don't worry you did great and I would have reacted the same way or, even worse," Mel's consoling words not doing much to help Hailey.
Staring up at me, her eyes filled with horror. "We have to go home," she whispered.
Sensing someone standing close beside me, I look up to a middle aged Afro American couple, standing with a warm smile, their eyes on Hailey and Emmy.
"My dear," the lady spoke to Hailey, "what you and your husband did was a good thing standing up for her," she paused, nodding at Emmy. "Let bullies know, they won't always win." She smiles, her husband stretches out a hand towards me.
"Mr. Johnson," he introduces himself. "It's a pleasure meet you, Mr. Knights" he says, shaking my hand heartily and nods at Hailey, chuckling. "You've got a good woman there," he laughs, "strong and feisty are the best kind," wncing when his wife nudges him in his waist.
Hailey looks away shyly when I put an arm around her shoulder, "yeah, she's the best," I agreed, causing her to blush some more.
Wishing us the best, the Johnson couple returned to their table, leaving us in awe of the gym incident making it's rounds on social media.
I am surprised at the attention this post is generating with the Knights name!
