TWENTY NINE - BLIND JUSTICE

Marcus Dean languished in the centre for four weeks prior to his first court appearance and was escorted to the court building like the common executive criminal. The matter was called up for mention in the small courtroom with only the judge, clerk of court and what he assumed were the attorneys representing the crown. The clerk of court read out the charges against Marcus Dean and the judge asked if the Crown case was at a point to commence

“No, your honour, we are awaiting the statements and the files from the police. We also understand that the arresting officer is currently off the island, your honour, and cannot be located.”

“So, when will he be returning?” the judge asked.

“We are not sure, your honour,” the crown replied after consulting with her colleagues.”

“The matter will be called up for mention again in three months.”

“We are asking that the defendant be remanded in custody, your honour.”
