THIRTY-TWO

The surveillance room was extremely quiet, which was expected since Ashley and I were the only ones in the room. Thankfully the thick door of the small room drowned out all the arguing going on downstairs. But immediately Ashley laid eyes on Catherine, the peace and quiet I was enjoying disappeared. At first she murmured to herself for over five minutes and I pretended not to notice, hoping that it would end soon, but when it continued, my vocal cords did the unthinkable.

“What is wrong?” the words fell out of my mouth before I could even think of stopping them.

“Being assistant class president sucks.” Ashley replied.

I hesitated for a few seconds, contemplating ending the discussion there, but as usual my vocal cords betrayed me.

“Why is that?” I heard myself ask.

And those three words opened the heavily locked doors that were Ashley's lips.
