CHAPTER 24

“Okay, we would camp here for the night” Nneka’s voice veered round the small crowd and the chorus of the footfall ceased.

They had arrived at a river bed, whose water had long disappeared into the hungry stomach of the earth. Dried leaves flowed on the floor, a perfect covering from the hard earth underneath. The last ray of the sun had just shut its eyes to the world, leaving the people with a moonless sky. Cripes of cricket mellowed the night, announcing the end of a stressful day and the incubation of a new one. The heads of the trees were beginning to swell with the gentle wind, soon the night would be covered with fog.

Ada sat down on the floor. She searched through her burden and collected the wolf skin which Nneka had given her two days ago. She spread a cloth on the floor, and then place the wolf skin on it. Amadi laid down, his angelic face looking charming in the night as ever.
