Form July in his sophomore year in college until the following January, all David Harel knew was books and video games. He turned 21 at that time, but even the event of adulthood and drinking meant nothing to him. Diving deep into Sci Fi and Fantasy stories seemed to be the most natural thing to do. Although he knew why, the fantasy and wonderful stories were merely an escape mechanism to avoid his unpleasant life. David was born in an upper middle-class family, although it was a broken one, it was still family to him. At the early age of 6, David was diagnosed with psychopathy which made most people uncomfortable when around him. He was not bothered by most of the looks and whispers by other parents when growing up, but it still distributed him sometimes.
In his later teenage years, David experienced a few relationships and friendships, but nothing ever came of them. It didn't bother him so much as the lack of emotions he had. "I'm better off alone" David often told himself.
During breaks, David often went camping alone in the mountains, he liked gazing at the midnight sky, the millions of stars shining above, entertaining the thought of worlds and planets inhabited by advanced alien civilizations. It was the only moment of his life, David enjoyed, he never was happy nor satisfied with his life; he was always angry and hateful although those emotions were directed at himself instead of anyone else. Sadly, without even knowing, his life came to a sudden stop when he reached his 23rd birthday.
That day, David went for a hike in the mountains, since neither his family nor friends really cared about him. David felt the cold embrace of death that day, as he jumped from the mountain side. He felt a cold and eery blanket enveloping him as he plummeted to the ground. In his last moments David couldn't fathom why death had such a strong hold on him, why he had decided to jump.
-----------------------------------------
David was confused when he woke up to find himself alive. His first thought was his attempted on taking his own life had failed, but he wasn't injured nor dreaming. In fact, he felt stronger and more muscular than before, his body felt different from his skinny and weak self. For one, he was taller than what he used to be. But something told him, that this wasn't his own body, he could feel it in his bones. Why? He couldn't answer. Raising is right hand to touch his face, while inspecting where he was, David's eyes widened when he understood where he was.
Before him laid a dark abyss, that seemed to run down to the earth's core. All he could see was a thick cloud of nothingness swirling around him, all he could feel was a piercing cold wind on his body. His mind was clear. Suddenly out of nowhere, a figure appeared in front of him, David felt as if the figure was seizing him up.
"David Harel, age 23, time of death: 21:12pm, cause of death: suicide," said the figure with an eery voice.
"Where am I?" David asked curiously.
"Nowhere and everywhere, or as you call it, the void." Responded the figure.
"Do you know why you died?" Asked the mysterious figure.
"Not sure, I guess I didn't like my life?" David supposed.
"No, you were summoned here to complete a task." Replied the figure with a monotone voice.
"wait, wait?!" exclaimed David with a hint confusion.
"Your task, is the get rid of corruption and madness in a parallel universe of yours." Stated the figure.
"So, the theory of a multi-verse is true then." Muttered David under his breath.
"You were chosen for this task, because of your knowledge of that world, but also because of your character." Continued the figure.
"Knowledge? So, does that mean I will get transported into another world, maybe like the Marvel or Harry Potter universe?" David questioned the figure.
"Not quite, the universe you will attending, was chosen by your personality and we concluded the best universe for you, is the one known you know as the Borderlands universe." Answered the figure.
"Eh?" was the only sound that came from David's mouth after listening to the figure.
"You'll be going to a place known as Pandora. But make no mistake, this is not a planet of peace and love. It's a wasteland, that it's dangerous, that only a fool would search for something of value there. Well then perhaps You will be a fool. But do not be fooled by what Pandora appears to be. There is a legend. The legend of the Vault. Containing advanced alien technology, infinite wealth, fame, power, women. So you can understand why some little kids who hear the stories grow up to become Vault hunters. Well, you may not believe. But I tell you it is true. The legend of the Vault is real, and is on Pandora.
The Vault was opened using a mystical key, though it was a disappointment for the hunters. The Vault was just an alien prison. The warriors who opened it, vanished into the wastelands, certain that the Vault held no treasure at all. They were wrong. The Vault's opening triggered the growth of Eridium, a priceless alien element. Soon, the rare and valuable mineral emerged all across Pandora. Its appearance attracted many. Including... the Hyperion corporation.
They came to Pandora to mine Eridium, and bring order to the savage planet. Through their excavations, Hyperion uncovered evidence of an even greater Vault. Their leader vowed to find it, to use its power to civilize the Borderlands once and for all. But Hyperion weren't the only ones searching for the next Vault's alien power. The call of danger and loot is not so easily resisted. Certain warriors came to Pandora in droves to uncover its hidden secrets. Some would call them adventurers. Others call them fools. But I... call them Vault Hunters."
"Wait… What ?!" David shouted, he couldn't understand what was happening to him, was he dead? What was this figure? With a blank expression and David said with a weary voice "And what am I supposed to do there?"
"Your task, is to restore balance and get rid of the madness of that world, because we cannot directly interact with the worlds, we send "heroes" to them when they turn out corrupted and tainted by the free Will we gave them. Now close your eyes and concentrate on your mind." Responded the figure.
As instructed by the figure, David closed his eyes and concentrated on his thoughts. He didn't bother or want to ask it what it was, he already knew deep down, what the figure was. Trying to make sense of what was happening, David remembered the memories of the video game franchise, and classic "self-inserts" stories he read throughout his life. Until his thoughts were abruptly interrupted by a sound, the sound was of mental clunking and grinding. He could feel a cold piercing wind on his face. David was confused when he regained his vision, instead of a thick cloud of nothingness, he saw a wreckage, of what seemed to be a train. He was lying flat on his stomach with snow all around him, turning to the source of the sound David could see a funny looking robot digging something up with a shovel.
The robot spotted him and shouted "Wait a minute, you're not dead! YES now I can finally get off this glacier! CL4P-TR4P your metaphorical ship has finally came in!".
David took a few seconds until he realised where he was. He also already knew who the robot was, the robot that called itself Claptrap resembled Wall-E which was another robot from a Pixar movie he watched during his childhood, Claptrap had a annoyingly high-pitched voice, with only one eye to see and a deflated wheel to move.
David started to sweat profusely while Claptrap helped him get up. "Allow me to introduce myself, I am CL4P-TR4P steward bot but my friends call me claptrap! Or they would if any of them were still alive, or had they existed in the first place!". Said the robot.
"So, I'm starting in borderlands 2, that would mean I need to get to Sanctuary and warn the resistance against Handsome Jack's plan" Whispered David to himself.
"Oh! I got something for you! Here take this ECHO communicator that I totally didn't loot from one of these corpses. It comes with a class-12 heads-up display. Complete with a mini-map, come come friend let's get you inside".
----------------------------------------------------
(ECHO communicator: BOOT SEQUENCE INITIATED)
(ECHO communicator: INITIALIZING… HEALTH DISPLAY MODULE)
(ECHO communicator: INITIALIZING… EXPERIENCE POINT MODULE)
(ECHO communicator: INITIALIZING… DIGITAL MAP MODULE)
----------------------------------------------------
"Man, this is great! Now that I've met a mighty Vault Hunter, I can finally join the resistance in Sanctuary, take vengeance against Jack for killing my product line, and repair my central processor so I stop thinking out loud! I wonder what it's like to have a belly button."
A health bar, mini-map and compass appeared in the corners of David's peripheral vision, as Claptrap rolled away. "Wait, I'm stuck in a parallel universe, that would mean the NPC's are normal human beings not scripted 3d models. So, does that mean I could theoretically kill them or choose a side to fight for?" David thought, while staring at the ground for what seemed to be a few minutes.
"Hey, are you coming?" Questioned Claptrap.
While looking around at his surroundings, David heard a female voice saying "ll explain everything soon, but know this – you're alive for a reason, and I… am here to help you."
"Who said that?" replied David with caution.
the female voice didn't say anything more and left. David secretly knew who was talking to him, it was Angel, Handsome Jack's daughter who was a siren with supernatural powers. While contemplating his thoughts David said to himself. "If I can choose a side, I could sway Angel to secretly work with me, since she hates Jack. With her working for me, I could get access to important information and even control Helios."
Controlling Helios would be essential to control the planet, since he could use moonshots to stop anyone that apposes him, the massive space station was Borderlands version of the Death Star.
Before following Claptrap to his hideout, David instead investigated the wreckage. "If I remember correctly, this was part of the intro scene for Borderlands 2, when Handsome Jack invites all the Vault Hunters onto the train just to blow them up with the message "Welcome to Pandora, Kiddos"." Thought David while examining the remains of the train.
"The playable Vault Hunters were Zero, Maya, Axton, Krieg, Gaige, and Salvador. All with different play styles and Skill Trees." Said David. At the moment, he realised something odd, he wasn't any of them, so who was he? Did he have any abilities or skills? Searching for an answer David looked around for any reflective surfaces. He froze momentarily when he looked at his reflection on a piece of broken class. He understood now, why he felt stronger, muscular, and more powerful then before. Raising his hands to touch his face, David yelled. "I'm Anakin f*cking Skywalker!" He examined his face with his hands, he had the scar on his cheek, his eyes were an intense shade of blue, he was also wearing anakin's robes during the clone war series. The Jedi weapon, the Lightsaber was hanging on his thigh. "Oh, sh*t!" Said David excited. Well, we all know where this is going.
