Practice Time: Part 3

Ray's POV

Ellie and I made our way down the stairs and into the living room. She needed the space to teleport and I needed it to… figure out what I do. According to the book I have cosmic powers. I'm not particularly sure what that entails but it sounds cool.

"You know Ray, we actually don't really know what your powers are per se." It's like she was reading my mind. I'm pretty sure Johnny is the only telepath here though. Maybe she doesn't need powers to do it. I found out that she's freaky like that.

"Yeah, but maybe we have enough room for me to fly. It sounds really fun." As far as we know, all of Ellie's powers are pretty defensive. Forcefield and teleportation are more protective than anything. Not like we could do much damage to the house with it. Unless we test her force field. Probably not with a blast or anything. If I can even do that.

Ellie and I sat on opposite sides of the room. I wanted to make sure she had ample room and I wanted some too in case I want to try something. Maybe I can do that weird star projection thing I did in Jay's bedroom. That seemed harmless enough. Ellie was already gonna go first so all I have to do is sit and watch.

"Okay, I'm gonna do forcefield first." She stated. She pulled her arms into an x shape on her chest. Then, she forcefully extended her arms and the forcefield appeared. She looked so skilled and graceful. It was like she had experience for someone who just got their powers. I wonder if everyone else is like this too. Maybe I'll be as good as her when I practice.

"Let me try and hit it with something!" I got up in excitement. Is it good for practice and training? Yes. Do I wanna hit things? Also yes. "I don't want to break anything though so I'll just use my hands. Once I was in front of the forcefield, I brought my hands above my head and slammed them down. Not too had though because I don't eat to break them. As soon as I made contact I was shot into the air. The energy from it caused me to go flying.

"Ray!" She shouted as she teleported underneath me to try and catch me. Before I could reach her, I stopped. The reflexes that I wasn't aware of caused me to start flying. Thank you magic book. "Are you alright up there?" Ellie asked. The living room has a pretty high ceiling so I have space to move around.

"Yeah, I'm good. I think my powers activated by themselves. This so cool!" I tensed up a little and started to move forward. It's such a surreal experience flying. Granted I'm indoors but it's still cool nonetheless. I just drifted through the room with the look of pure bliss on my face. Ellie watched from the ground in awe.

"Alright, come down Peter Pan. I still wanna practice." I went to try and land when Ellie surprised me with a loud, "SHIT!"

"What's wrong?" I asked. Her sudden outburst was more than a bit strange. She's normally collected so whatever this is must be serious.

"Jay's parents just pulled up outside. They're early."

"WHAT?!" My loss of concentration caused me to fall onto the ground. Pain shot through my body, but as I got up and stretched, it quickly subsided. I never wrote it down but maybe I have faster healing. Maybe we all do. The others needed to know about this too. I floated up by the staircase and called for them.

"GUYS CAN YOU COME DOWNSTAIRS!" I'm sure they heard me so I lowered myself back onto the floor. The sound of footsteps permeated the otherwise silence of the house. They all quickly descended down the stairs.

"What's going on?" Amy asked.

"Jay's parents are here," I said.

"Fuck." Jay said softly. He waved his hand in the direction of the T.V and it turned on. He then twisted his hand and it changed to Avengers Endgame. "Ellie, can you teleport upstairs and turn all the lights off and close the doors? And hide the weed." He asked. She nodded and in a flash, she was gone.

"Everyone go sit down and I'll make popcorn." Myles ran to the pantry at an alarming speed. He almost crashed into the counter looked floored when he braced himself. In less than a second, the popcorn was in the microwave heating up. The rest of us sat down on the couch and tried to look like we've been there a while. I sat with Jay on my right and Johnny on my left with space for Myles at the end. Amy sat on one side of the love seat and Ellie appeared next to her. Jay waved his hand again and blankets manifested onto us.

Keys could be heard unlocking the door so Jay unpaused the movie. The second the microwave beeped, Myles was on it. He was quickly on the couch with the popcorn in a bowl. When the door opened we all acted surprised at their entrance. We greeted them as they did us.

"Did you guys have a good night?"

"Yeah, we're just settling in and watching a movie. You can join us if you want." Jay sounded so normal. Like he hadn't just… wait… was that magic he was using? How did he do that? Maybe he learned how to use it upstairs because he sure as hell couldn't use it before.

"Sure, we're just gonna clean ourselves up and we'll join you." His dad gave him a pat on the back and walked to his room along with the mother. We all let out a sigh of relief when the door closed.

"Okay, we have to keep our powers a secret. We don't wanna end up as some government experiments or something." Johnny looked around at all of our faces to gauge our reactions. None of us seemed to disagree.

"Alright, but now that we have powers, maybe we can be like them." I pointed toward the forgotten T.V showing the avengers being the heroes they are. If we learned how to use our powers, we could be like them. Although, I'd rather not fight a titan with rocks that can just end my life.

"Being a superhero does sound kind of fun." Amy shrugged.

"How are we gonna make suits though?" Miles asked. It's a good question. We can't go out in pedestrian clothes if we're really gonna do this.

"Jay can make them, you saw how he did the thing with the blankets." I pointed out.

"Uh, to be fair, I'm not completely sure how I did that. I need like a spellbook or something. This magic thing isn't as easy to use as I thought. But I guess I could try." So it was settled. We are going to be superheroes. I can't tell if this is the best or worst mistake we're ever going to make. We'll figure that part out later though. That's future us's problem.

Myles laid down and put his head in Johnny's lap. It seems like something is going on between those two, but I don't know if they know that. Maybe a group of disasters shouldn't be heroes.

Jay's parents walked out of their room and sat on the other empty couch. We ceased our conversation, got comfortable, and restarted the movie. We can be heroes later, but we're gonna be kids now. I felt a shift next to me. Jay moved just a little closer to me. I'm not sure if he noticed but I felt a blush still crawl onto my face anyway.
