Who The Hell Is That Guy?

If the stairs weren't made of concrete I'm sure they wouldn't have been safe to climb up. Actually, I'm sure nothing in this building is safe. It has been closed down for a long time. I wish we had somewhere nicer to practice but this is what we're stuck with. The life of a super-powered teenager is not an easy one. At least there's no fighting anyone to the death yet. I hope there's no fighting to the death ever. That sounds physically and emotionally exhausting. Also as much as this building makes me want to jump off, I don't wanna die.

The stairs seemed to go on and on as we ascended higher up. Once we got about 6 floors up we stopped. Going too high could cause problems. We want to be lower than the center of the building. The least amount of attention we draw the better. The hall we entered looked like a replica of the ground floor. Rubble still littered the floor and the place is still empty besides a few pieces of old equipment. We ventured to the side facing away from the highway for the least amount of attention possible.

"This should be good," Amy said. This must've been a conference room because it's spacious and has more than enough room for us all. I approached Ellie and whispered softly into her ear. She gives me a look filled with confusion but goes on with what she was doing. A sigh slips from my lips because I didn't have to explain myself. I walked away from Ellie and started moving some debris and trash out of the way. There's a few pieces of large furniture and supplies.

A flash of light from Ellie's teleportation makes me turn around. A thud sounds from the hallway and I know she succeeded in what I asked her to do. I rushed out and saw someone wearing all black lying on the floor. Ellie stood next to them looking surprised and accomplished. Footsteps approached behind me and I turned to see the rest of my friends looking concerned behind me.

"Whom the hell is that?" Myles asked as he poked the man with his foot.

"That is the person that's been following me. What do you have to say for yourself weirdo?" The guy groans and slowly lifts himself off the floor. He doesn't seem very injured considering Ellie isn't that strong. Although we all seem to be stronger than before the whole book ordeal. And just a little faster too. Perks of having powers I guess.

"That was a smart plan, having her teleport behind me and attack. Even if she didn't know what she was hitting. I knew I picked the right person for this." The man dusts himself off and stands up straight. He's tall. Taller than Johnny, and Johnny is like 6' something. His eyes are glowing teal that slowly shifts back to a normal brown color.

"Wait, aren't you the guy that gave me the book in the first place?" The eyes are so familiar so it has to be him. I remember those glowing eyes anywhere.

"Wait so you're the book guy? Thank you but also fuck you. You almost got us killed!" Amy shouted at him. She was right in front of him poking him in the chest. Then she realized what she was doing and stopped. Amy then shuffled away back to Myles and Johnny.

"Why don't you take off your mask child stalker!" Myles shouted as he clutched Johnny's arm. God those two are like a couple sometimes and they're not even dating. And they're both straight. Although, I digress. The man lifted his hand and with a flash of teal, the mask was gone. He looked like he was in his early thirties and fairly attractive. Good job magic man, you are considered hot by a teenage boy. I hope he's proud of himself.

"Great, that helped none at all because I still have no idea who the fuck you are." The man rolled his eyes at Johnny and folded his arms across his chest. He already looked tired of us and the pride from our clever scheme to get him vanished.

"My name is Damen, you don't get my last name. I'm a practitioner of the mystic arts and I gave you that book because a spell told me you are my best chance at stopping some dangerous people." That's a lot to take in but I feel like we haven't even scratched the surface of things we don't know.

"What kind of spell tells you a teenager is your best chance at stopping dangerous adults?" Ellie yelled. She was a skeptic all the time but now we need to be one. If we didn't all have powers and I didn't see his mask disappear, I would've thought he was crazy. Sadly we are all crazy.

"It was a very complex ritual that relied on calling upon the guidance of the universal energies. It gave me flashes of the future. A future that all of you are apparently a part of. So since you uncovered my lurking, I guess I'm gonna have to help you all now. Mostly you," He points a finger at me and I get uncomfortable. I feel singled out and that's not fun.

"Why me? What did I do?" Damen looks exasperated and I look around at the rest of my friends for any help.

"It's cause you have magic dingus," Myles said to me. Oh yeah, Damen did text me that he would teach me magic. Finally, I've been waiting for so long. This whole magic thing has been pissing me off since the powers seem to do what they want.

"Nothing I've done in my entire life has prepared me for working with teenagers." He walked into the conference room and we all moved out his way. Stranger danger and all that.

"Listen, you brought us into this, don't get upset that we're annoying now." Johnny walked in behind Damen with Myles still hanging on his arm. The rest of us followed close behind. The man is weird but seems to want to help. At least I think so, I'm not sure I am the best judge of character. Or judge of anything. I'm terrible at judging.

We enter the room and it's still disheveled and broken up. Only for a short while though. Damen's magic flickers on his fingers and travels all over his arm. He crosses his arms with his hands up and puts his middle fingers down along with the index. He chants something deeply and throws his arms apart. The magic raced off of him and formed a portal or gateway to an empty field. He waves us through before stepping in himself. Before anyone can stop me, I take the first step inside and I feel the same.

"Jay? Are you okay? Did your brain melt or something?" I look around at the field and it's beautiful. It's rather large and surrounded by trees. I'm not exactly sure where we are though.

"Yeah, I'm good. The weird portal thing is safe to come through I think. Unless I'm mind controlled and he's making me say this." I turn back to Damen in front of me. "Are you mind controlling me to lure my friends into a trap?" Damen looks like he is so tired of me and it's been like 5 minutes.

"I do not do mind control, you moron. It's just a portal." He doesn't even turn around to look at me.

"Hey, don't you call my friend a moron!" Ellie marched through the portal with all of my friends behind her.

"Yeah, you moron!" Myles shouts from beside her.

"Wow, what a comeback Mr. Boswell. Now may we begin our training? I am trying to keep you all safe after all." He chants again and rotates his hands in the air. Things appear around us to help us train I assume. They're all drastically different, but so are our powers. "Now," He turns around and faces us. "Who's ready to begin." I'm scared. But, this is what we came here for. Time to be a hero I guess.
