A Promise

520 Haibin road.

After getting home Ava felt bored so Oliver took her to the third floor to the entertainment room for Karaoke.

Mrs. Lee came in to give them fruit salad, but Ava grabbed her hand and said, "Mrs. Lee, come and sing with us. It's boring for just the two of us to sing."

Mrs. Lee's face stiffened. She quickly shook her head and said, "No..no, I have something to do in the kitchen."

Oliver understood Mrs. Lee was afraid of him so he said with a gentle smile, "Mrs. Lee, it's OK. Stay here and sing for a while."

Mrs. Lee's looked at Oliver a bit stunned and a small smile appeared on her mouth. It seems that Mr. Knight has really changed. He used to be so cold once but now he often smiles and laughs.

They all sang and laughed for a while and enjoyed the night just like that.

Although Mrs. Lee was an elder but she was not that old. She had no family and Oliver was her benefactor. Three years ago, Mrs. Lee and her family had a car accident in which her husband and the only son died but Oliver saved her. When she woke up at the hospital, she wanted to kill herself but Oliver talked her out of it. Later Mrs. Lee was very grateful to him and decided to repay Oliver's kindness. But as she was an old woman Oliver didn't have any suitable job for her, instead, he gave her a large amount of money so she could live the rest of her life comfortably. Mrs. Lee kept the money but didn't give up. She made him promise that if ever he needed her he will reach out. Last month Oliver suddenly called Mrs. Lee and asked if she would like to work as a housekeeper for him. Mrs. Lee was very happy and immediately agreed.

520 Haibin Road has now become Mrs. Lee's home. Every night when she watched Oliver and Ava come back from work, she felt like these are her own children so she always tried to take good care of them.

The night got deeper and Ava felt sleepy so Oliver picked her up in his arm and walked back to their bedroom. Ava saw that Mrs. Lee was laughing at her, and her face became instantly red.

"Oliver, just now when Mrs. Lee was singing I felt like she was really lonely," Ava said sadly.

"Silly girl, don't be sad. It's true that Mrs. Lee had a miserable life. She has no family and no one to take care of her, that's why I called her to take care of you. I thought that way she will have someone to take care of and you will also have someone to accompany you at home." Oliver sighed.

"You are really very kind Oliver." Ava put her head on Oliver's chest.

"Silly girl." Oliver held her in his arm and gently stroked her hair.

"Oliver what about Uncle Joe? Does he have a family?" Ava suddenly thought of Uncle Joe, she always felt Uncle Joe was also very lonely.

Oliver shook his head and said: "Uncle Joe is single. He used to be the elite of Special Forces. He has been working in our family since he retired from the army. He actually watched me growing up. When he was in the forces his beloved died during a mission and he swore to never get married."

Ava looked at Oliver and saw a sadness in his eyes, suddenly Ava asked "Oliver, if I die, will you miss me?"

Oliver's face instantly changed and become sullen. "What nonsense are you talking about, why would you die?"

"Oliver I am a human, I will have to die someday," Ava said laughing.

"No. You can't die, you must always be by my side." Oliver got a little excited and his eyes looked panicked as if the mere thought of Ava's death was too scary for him. He couldn't go through that pain again, he couldn't lose her too.

Ava could feel his mood and she was a bit confused why would he react like that all of a sudden, as if he had been through the pain of the death of someone very close? As far she knew Oliver's family members were all alive and well.

"Fine, I'll always be by your side" Ava tried to comfort him.

Hearing Ava Oliver calmed down and with a smile, he said in a very gentle voice, "In the future, we will die together, OK! Promise me."

Ava thought it was an unreasonable request. Who could tell when someone is going to die but she also felt warm in her heart thinking he didn't want to live a day without her. She smiled and said, "I Promise."

On such a deep night, two people unaware of the future made a promise to each other to live and die side by side.

Anderson's House.

Outside the house, the night was very quiet but inside, Kiara was shouting and pacing angrily. She broke everything that was out of her reach in the living room.

Mark looked at her angrily, he was trying hard to calm his daughter down but she wouldn't listen to him. He felt his head was throbbing with a headache because of Kiara's impatient behavior.

"Kiara, how many times I have told you that you cannot lose your temper like this. You must learn to be patient and keep calm when any situation arises." Mark took out his tobacco pipe and started to smoke, at times like this only smoking could calm him down. His daughter was so noisy that he couldn't stand it anymore.

"Dad that Ava Green dared to humiliate me like that, how can I swallow it? She even said Oliver didn't want me. How dare she, I want to kill her!" Kiara's red eyes were burning with rage.

Mark sighed helplessly: "Kiara, it's not like dad wants to hurt you too but what she said was true, Oliver really doesn't want you. If he liked you even a little then you two would already be together by now. You have known him all your life, you should get that by now. Forget him, there are so many good men in this world. Why do you have to waste your time on him?"

Listening to Mark's words, Kiara's mood got even more broken. She stomped her feet and looked at Mark angrily, "Dad, what do you mean by that? Haven't you always been supporting me? Then why change of heart all of a sudden?"

Mark had suffered a lot in love so he didn't want his daughter to repeat his mistakes. Love is the most reluctant thing in this world. Seeing Kiara's stubborn nature today Mark suddenly realized that he had pampered her too much and now she was out of control now.
