Ava was walking absentminded without knowing where she was heading, suddenly she noticed a couple was standing under the camphor tree not far away. She immediately recognized Sam but the woman with him, she had never seen her before. Ava assumed that must be Sam's friend the way they were talking and laughing loudly, after all this used to be his campus. It's normal to meet an old friend.
Ava slowly came behind Sam and called out with a gentle smile, "Sam!"
Sam immediately turned and saw Ava was standing behind him. His face immediately became warm and he extended his hand to hold her hand.
Annie was surprised seeing the sweet gesture and she felt very awkward, she slowly asked, "Sam, is this your girlfriend?"
"I'm not. We're just friends." Ava answered before Sam could. She was sure Sam would say yes without any hesitation even though she was not.
The smile on Sam's face froze and there was a loss in his eyes but he quickly composed himself and said with a warm smile, "Not yet, but will be soon."
Ava was stunned and embarrassed. She never agreed to be with Sam, yet he never gives up, any chance he gets he tries to change her mind. Ava looked at Annie carefully, the woman was a bit short but in her short hair, she looked really cute and warm like a neighbor next door.
"Well, I wish you two all the best. Sam, I have something to do, I'll catch up with you later." Annie was really embarrassed and a little hurt so she quickly said and decided to leave from there.
"Ok, goodbye."
"Bye."
After Annie left, Sam reached out to hold Ava's hand but Ava dodged and started to walk forward. Ava and Oliver had broken up half a month ago, but she still refuses to let him hold her hands or let him come close to her. Samuel was a bit frustrated. The more Ava tries to distance herself from him the more he wanted to find a way to her heart.
"Why is your class ended so soon?"
"The professor had something to do so he left after the first lesson."
"Ok."
"Why are you still here? Didn't I tell you I will go home by myself?" Ava asked as she walked forward.
"I was waiting for you. I can't feel at ease until I see you safe at home." Sam smiled softly and caught up with Ava.
"Sam, you really don't have to do that. I'm not a kid and I have always been running all over alone." Ava looked at Sam and said seriously. She was a bit annoyed by his consistent nagging. Ava liked Sam as a friend but sometimes she needed some space and time for herself, but Sam was always there and keep talking about things she didn't want to hear. She was tired by keep refusing him, he just wouldn't give up so Ava decided to ignore him.
"I know, It's just I wanted to see you and spend some time with you," Sam said with a bitter smile, he could feel that Ava was annoyed by him but his reluctant heart wouldn't give up.
They got into Sam's car and Sam turned on the radio, the soft music made the atmosphere inside the car soothing. Ava closed her eyes and tried to remember the lecture and memorize the important points from it.
"Why didn't you ask me who was the woman I was talking to just now?" Looking at Ava's relaxed face Sam was at loss. She didn't react at all to see him with Annie and neither did she ask anything, so he was a bit worried. Does she not care at all?
"What is there to ask? Your ex-girlfriend?" Ava said with eyes still closed, she already guessed it. The way she was looking at Sam, it was very obvious that she still had him in her heart. Ava felt bad for her when Sam said she will be his girlfriend soon. The woman was clearly hurt hearing that, but Sam didn't even care.
"Yes, we dated for a short period of time when we were at university," Sam said wanting Ava to ask more questions.
"Well, she is very pretty," Ava said with a polite smile.
"Not as pretty as you." Sam quickly said.
Ava didn't want to hear all this again so she opened her eyes and looked at Sam tiredly, then said, "Sam, I'm very tired. I want to rest my eyes for a while, please call me when we reach home."
"OK," Sam said bitterly and concentrated on the drive.
Sam wanted Ava to ask about his previous relationship, it would show that she cared but her cold and indifferent attitude made him feel even more hopeless now. He didn't know when Ava will let him in her heart. But he wouldn't give up, He had gone through enough trouble to break her up with Oliver. He believed Ava will forget Oliver one day and accept him.
