Chapter 3

I saw the guy named Jorol stand up, walking towards the door. I haven't notice that I was zoning out by following his every move. He was just about to exit the room when his head turned back, towards me! I felt heat rise to my cheeks as he flashed me a broken smile. I realized that he was the only one who noticed me. Before I could even compremend what was happening, I found myself grabbing his arm and shouting "NO."

My voice caught everyone's attention including Ms Harvey.

"Who are you?" she stared me down but I only smiled at her.

"Mira Sluvashki, I'm new." I nodded my head at the class and lead Jorol outside of the classroom, not sparing anyone else a glance nor looking back.

"That was..." Jorol looked at me as I lead him to the nurse's office.

I smiled sheepishly and let go of his arm.

"I know..." I sighed.

"You have no idea what you done."

I turned my head and tilted it as I looked back at him. "What do you mean?"

"You just made yourself a target." Jorol looked at me with his deep blue eyes.

"For what?"

This time it was Jorol's turn to grab my arm.

"You're different." The tone in his voice changed as he looked into my eyes.

"You're very observant." I smiled and removed his hand from my arm to show him I wasn't afraid of the consequences of my actions.

"Mira you don't understand what kind of school this is..."

I stopped in my tracks.

"Doesn't matter." I mumbled. "No one deserves to be treated like that. Who did that to you?"

"I-I cannot tell you anything..."

"Alright. I understand." I continued walking with him to the nurse's office.

"Why are you helping me?" He spoke up through the silence when we were halfway there.

"You're a French exchange student right?" I avoided answering his question.

"Oui." he said shyly.

We finally reached the nurse's office but she was no where to be seen.

"What in the..."

Jorol sighed behind me.

"I forgot to tell you that we don't have one..."

I scoffed and walked over to one of the freezers.

"Too bad, you just got one."

Jorol laughed. "You're funny Mira."

I blushed as he said my name again.

I took out some ice bags and walked over to him.

"Hold still." I felt my hand tremble a bit as I pressed the ice to his face, which made him gasp.

"Mira." he grabbed my wrist and I found myself gulp as he looked at me with concern behind his eyes. "Please go back. You're going to get in trouble. I'll be okay."

I nodded my head and felt disappointed as he let go of my wrist.

We didn't break eye contact as I backed out of the room.

"Take care, Jorol." I spun around and took off running again. I need to stop this habit of running in the halls.

When I reached the classroom again, my heart was racing and my breath stuck in my throat. Do not get me wrong. I am not unfit. I'm just a little nervous.

"Welcome. Mira." Ms. Harvey hissed like an ice cold snake while her eyes flickered with annoyance. "Why don't you introduce yourself to the class."

That actually made the class stop doing what they were doing and pay attention to what was happening. I had to count to ten again to not lose it.

"Sure," I responded and flashed her a sarcastic smile.

I walked up to the front but in the middle, taking a deep breath to help my light headed body stay conscious.

"Its nice to meet all of you. My name is Mira 'Slu-Vash-Ski', 16. I'm not from here." I halted for I didn't know what to say next and shrugged instead.

The class blinked at me while others smirked at me and others held back their laughter.

"How do you like your new school so far?" Miss Harvey questioned placing a hand on my shoulder.

I don't know, how do I even answer that.

"Its different I guess, though I've already been here for about an hour and I'm already late for assembly." the class laughed at what I said and I found myself smiling a bit.

"Did you have a lot of friends back home? Don't you miss them?"

That snapped me out of my thoughts.

"No ma'am! She is just a lonely loner!" One of the boys from the back, who's name I didn't hear before shouted out and after that the class burst out laughing.

I kept taking deep breaths to calm myself down. Isn't that what my best friend always told me to do? I felt my jaw tightening, yes I miss her, I miss them all but what can I do?! The class erupting was enough to almost bring tears to my eyes.

"Actually I did have friends back home, lots of them-" I spoke up and was about to say more when a girl cut me off and the class started quieting down.

"Then just make new friends!" A girl from the front shouted. She had pretty blond curly hair and a pretty round face.

"What's your name?" I asked sheepishly.

"Its Margaret, my friends call me, Marie!"

I nodded my head sheepishly.

"Alright, any more questions?" Miss Harvey asked as I knew she was smirking inside.

I glared at her icy hand that was still on my shoulder.

At that moment almost everyone's hand went up and I widened my eyes. Miss Harvey picked another guy from the back whose name I didn't hear. He first cleared his throat before he spoke up, his hair was a messy blond, and it looked like he dyed it.

"How did you get your hair, you know, that color?"

I gasped softly as the guys snorted. I subconsciously touched my hair which was in a braid at the side of my head. If I could, I would not only smack that smirk off his face, but I would smack his face off his face!

"I didn't dye it, it is natural." I sighed under my breath keeping calm which only made his smirk widen more.

"Oh really? Gingers aren't natural!" He chuckled and high fived his friends next to him.

I rolled my eyes at his comment.

"Robert Olson." Ms Harvey interfered, "that was extremely rude."

"Why did you move here?" A soft voice came from the back and I looked to see it was the girl with the salmon colored hair with a beanie.

I felt myself biting my lip and everyone was now dead quiet as they awaited my answer. Suddenly I bit my lip too hard and it started bleeding inside my mouth, the metallic taste taking over my sense of taste. I wanted to gag but I couldn't so I sucked on my bleeding lip to draw the salty blood out. Gross.

"My parents didn't like my old school standards, they thought I would fit better in one of the top schools." I lied but I made myself believe it was the truth so no one noticed I was lying.

Something unexpected happened, the guy who's name I think is Avery opened his mouth to speak but no words came out. Instead he tried to make eye contact with me. The only reason I looked away was because I didn't want the class to see this. I felt myself biting my lip even harder as I stare at the wall behind him.

"Just so you know, my hair color is natural too." He winked back at me, but his wink was secluded and not some flirty remark. I saw some girls look at him with longing in their eyes.

"Now, my question."

"Do you have siblings?" He questioned and casually folded his hands behind his head.

The girls are glaring at me.

I bite my lip. How am I going to answer this? Sucking in more blood, I finally decided to reply.

"I used to..." I looked down, not wanting them to see the tears in my eyes.

"Oh... I'm sorry for asking.." he says awkwardly and at that moment I knew this guy avoids getting emotional.

When Mark's eyes met my gaze, he also surprised me.

"What's your favorite and best subject." Some of the guys shook their heads at the question.

"I guess Science and my best is Biology." I smiled politely.

Comments followed but I didn't pay mind to it.

Mark nodded his head. He seems nice. How fake it all seems...

"Pssst. Mark." I heard someone next to him whisper.

Unbelievable.

Mark turned his attention towards one of the guys and nodded his head at what the other guy was whispering in his ear. He flashed me a sly smile before he started talking.

"We were just wondering, what was your title, oh and," he leaned his head back so the other guy whispered in his ear again. Then he leaned back and sat up straight.

"And what type of guys you are into." after he said those words, he sent me an apologetic smile and I knew he only acted on group pressure.

My mouth almost dropped.

"I-I don't know...what the-"

"That's enough all of you." Miss Harvey's voice cut in.

"Mira, it's an honor to have you at our school, now go get a seat please."

The class started protesting.

"But mam'm she didn't answer!"

"That's not fair! I also wanted to ask a question."

I just shook my head as more comments followed.

"You can ask her later, all in good time, not in my class. Now Mira, take a seat."

I nodded my head and walked forward. The first seat that was second from the front, was an open desk next to a girl with cinnamon colored hair.

"Hello, may I sit here? " I smiled softly.

She blinked at me and nodded her head.

"Camille right?"

She nodded her head and looked away.

"I'm Mira."

She nodded her head again.

I tapped her on the back, but she just ignored me and kept looking in front of her. I made a huge mistake and looked around. And the minute I turned around, I regretted it. I noticed almost everyone's attention on me? Maybe it was on her. I looked back to see her frozen in place, looking in front of her. What the- When I looked back, I could see they were looking at her in some form of disdain.

Why though? What did she do wrong? I sighed and leaned on my arms, getting nowhere anyway.

A buzzing reached my ears and woke me- well in a way. I looked back at Camille to see her with a startled expression, while her face looked pale with sweat coating her forehead.

She slowly pulled out her phone, using her hand to cover what she was doing. Checking if the teacher was looking, she quickly unlocked her phone and pressed multiple buttons. I couldn't see the rest, I just heard her gasp next to me and I went back to laying on my arms.

"This can't be happening." She whimpered as she was clutching her phone.

"Is something the matter?" I asked softly. Curiosity was getting the better of me.

She looked back at me like she saw a ghost.

"Oh no no! Just a silly advertisement. And me being a drama queen about it." She bluffed. "Don't worry about me, I'm fine."

I shook my head as the bell rang and picked my backpack up and rushed out of the classroom.

I could see it. I know it.

She was lying...

I will find out what she is hiding.

Maybe coming to this school was my fate.
