Chapter 35

" Welcome. Hope you enjoy your time here. Please excuse us. " David ended the interaction on a dry note and gently ushered me away, further into the now more crowded room.

" Keep an eye on them but don't mix with them. Just don't. " David seemed quite on edge and anxious now. He started scouring the crowd. It was clear he was tense but he was trying hard not to show it.

" Hey, David. " I whispered, tugging at the sleeve of his suit. He hummed in response. " The guy in the red suit doesn't have any pockets. " My vague explanation received a scoff from the male.

" Cam, there's like ten people here in a red color suit, who are you on about? " I jerked my head to my right, gesturing towards the group we were just with. He turned his head slightly and peeked through the corner of his eye. " I can't see, there's a guy in my way. Are you sure though? " David turned his back once again on the group and prized my hand off of his sleeve. " Yeah, I'm sure. " I assured him.

We spent most of the night walking around greeting others and mixing. There were times where I would go to one group and David another but we would meet up shortly after both of our conversations ended. Throughout the night, one looked, sounded, or seemed suspicious, which was what I was expecting but I had to stay alert for anything that seemed out of place.

The ball was coming to an end and I, along with the staff, was exhausted. My leg was in agony. Not only was my wound fresh but also, I had been walking around in heels for the past six hours.

Soon enough, everyone left and the four of us were stuck in a messy, hot, and sweaty ballroom. I helped the staff tidy a bit but I soon felt bored.

" Excuse me, yeah, hello everyone. " I yelled. I was stood up at the top of the ballroom facing everyone who was in helping tidy up. They stopped what they were doing and put their stuff down, giving their full attention to me. " Firstly, I would like to thank you for your attention, hard work, and energy throughout the night. Very well done. " I stopped for a brief second and clapped my hands. Most followed my lead. Others couldn't due to full hands. " I can imagine how tired everyone would be right now, so everyone can go home and get some rest and a shower and leave this until tomorrow. To my knowledge, the ballroom won't be used at all tomorrow, meaning that you have all of tomorrow to clean it up. I know everyone has duties tomorrow but if they are not fully done by the end of the day, that's okay. As long as everything is back on track the day after. Okay, that's all, have a good night and see you all tomorrow. " I finished my speech on a high note and made my way back down to the double doors that lead to the main hallway.

The boys were nowhere to be found so I carried on, up the stairs, and into my room. " I made the bed, and got a ho- "

I snapped my pistol out of my thigh strap and cocked it in the direction of the voice. " Agggggh. " A defending shriek echo around the room. As I focused my sight pasted the top of the weapon, I sighed. Dolly stood there eyes and mouth wide open with her hand frantically shaking above her head. " Please, don't! "

I closed my eyes and lowered my gun. "Dolly, you scared the absolute sh*t out of me. " I took a hefty yet slightly shaky breath before opening my mouth to speak again. " I'm so sorry that you had to see that. I'm just on... On... Edge right now. I apologize. " I bowed to her and locked my gun before throwing it on the neatly, folded bedsheet, spread along my bed.

Just looking at the bed made me tired but I saw Dolly on the floor shaking, with her hands on her face. She was crying uncontrollably. This wasn't going to go down well with the boys and Sandra.

How can one movement make someone so distraught?

My feet meekly shuffled my body over to the scared woman and slung my arms over her. We rocked from side to side in each other's embrace. She reminded me of my first encounter with a gun.

It was not a nice reminder.
