Evolution.

(Random POV)

It has been six months since that day, the day when everything went wrong as it improved and ruined many lives. People lost their families and their homes during that day, the rich and the poor were all equally hurt. The people began calling that day as the 'calamity' and some others called it a new beginning, a new start for mankind to learn from their previous mistakes.

The religious people thought everything that happened was punishment from god so humanity can repent for their sins. I personally don't believe in a higher power, I don't actually know what is going on but I was quick to adapt.

My life was normal, I worked as a store clerk at my local gas station, but that was taken from me when we were forced to evacuate from my city. My city was one of the few cities that had been completely destroyed during the calamity in my country and I was forced to stay in a camp set up by the government.

Everywhere I went I saw misery and sadness, people just weren't made for this. The people that did come out relatively okay after the calamity were all lucky, they received some form of powers while others were forced to survive because they weren't so lucky.

I myself didn't receive anything but I am glad I didn't, I couldn't imagine having such a responsibility...

During the six months of Osiris' meditation the world didn't sit still, they began evolving and adapting to the situation like it always did. It has almost been so long that people began feeling this as the new norm, waking up in fear of what might lurk behind the walls protecting civilization.

In these six months many new discoveries were made, for example the most ground breaking discovery was the source of a new energy, the one Osiris has been using to gain power. This energy was complex, so complex that not even the leading scientist knew what to do with it, in scientific terms that is, but that was because they didn't think outside of the box and if they did it had caused only more confusion. This newfound energy is capable of what people thought to be impossible.

It granted power, power that wasn't meant for humans. People learned how to use it through trial and error and after just a short week after the calamity you could see people practising throwing fireballs around and shooting lightning out of their fingertips. But this new discovery made humans even more on edge than they originally were. If this energy was born as a result from the calamity what else came with it? Does this new found power indicate that humanity is supposed to be fighting against monsters? In the future, will monsters continue to evolve with humans?

All these questions were thrown around the internet yet none had a realistic answer, there were rumors and speculations but as already said, they are mere rumors and speculations.

Something that was also discovered shortly after the discovery of 'magic' was other forms of sentient life. Plants with actual intelligence and animals with the ability to speech. These led to some chaotic times, humanity truly wasn't ready for this, and everyone knew this. All they were able to do was take it step by step, careful not to make any mistakes, because they may just end up in your death…

With Osiris.

'So I was right, I was gone for long enough to miss a whole season.' Osiris thought as he looked at the leafless trees covered in snow. Not that Osiris minded this new discovery as it only meant that he grew much stronger and winter always was his favourite season out of the four, he never liked the heat that came with summer. Ever since the calamity the seasons became much more extreme and unpredictable.

Luckily for Osiris the snow on the ground wasn't that high as it was just the first winter but when the years start to move by the winters and other seasons start to become much more chaotic, so he was easily able to maneuver from point A, his cave, to point B, society. You may think that going to society is a bad idea, and it is. But Osiris didn't care as he felt that he wouldn't run into someone that would be able to threaten his health. All he wanted to do is find out the exact date and year, and of course find out , if he's lucky enough, if something else majorly changed due to the butterfly effect.

The magic was the same as it didn't change, it only felt more vigorous but that was to be expected since it is still young. The calamity did happen a year too early but there is nothing he could do about it since he didn't know what event caused the calamity and even if he did there was still nothing he could do to prevent that.

Even if his morals adjusted to better suit his new life if he knew how to reverse the calamity he would gladly do it. Having to constantly look over your shoulder in fear for a monster attack isn't fun and it eventually tires you out, either mentally or physically. Having powers sounds great and all but it actually places a bigger burden on someone then without it. People with powers would end up in other peoples schemes and corruption, if you have any form of power people will be jealous no matter how small it is.

That was also why Osiris stayed as far away from the big corporations and organisations in his last life. He may have been on the weaker side of the spectrum but that didn't make him immune to other peoples schemes and he didn't feel like being used and then end up being tossed away like used garbage.

He always put himself first and then others second.

Walking through land filled with snow quickly becomes boring, eventually you have seen everything there is about a land filled with white. It's so monotone and mind numbing, and don't forget snow blindness, even with his advanced eyesight he still has the risk of damaging his eyes. Something so mundane was a threat for someone who shrugged off bullets like a tank, it made Osiris chuckle a bit.

At least these thoughts kept Osiris busy while he traversed through the snowy landscape and after enough time passed like this the first signs of human civilization began showing. The forest became less dense and some footprints were left behind in the snow, Osiris with the knowledge he gained from being a hunter in his previous life told him that these footprints were a day or so old. There weren't any animal footprints nearby so these footprints must come from some sort of hunter in search of prey far in the forest.

'Now that I think about it, I haven't seen any sign of animals or monsters nearby. Could it be that they are scared of me?' Osiris chuckled a bit, but he didn't mind the peace. He really didn't feel like attacking any monster yet as it would be counterproductive.

'It took long enough.' Osiris thought with a sigh, he finally spotted the first human settlement. The settlement, from what Osiris could tell, was recently set up. Either they discovered something interesting in the area or there is a city nearby that requires refuge. 'All I have to do is wait till night and start my plan.'
