Cain wasn't very close to his previous father. The man was practically never home, he worked almost all day and only came home to sleep. He wasn't even sure if the guy was actually married to the woman, how they even conceived Cain was still a mystery to him.
That was why, when Cain saw his new father enter the room, he decided to completely ignore him and look elsewhere.
The man entered the room and looked around, until his gaze found Cain. He was laying down on his large bed with a pillow under his head, allowing him to look around. Cain never had eye contact and didn't acknowledge his fathers appearance.
Clyde was insulted that his son wouldn't at least greet him when he entered. He was the Count, the master of the household and had a higher status than the boy did. Cain not greeting his father was the same as a slap to the face for Clyde.
"Adelaide, I was told that Colden is awake. How is his condition?"
'Ah, so this body's name is Colden. And mom's name is Adelaide…'
"His body is still weak. He has trouble breathing and his voice is rough, otherwise he is fine."
Cain didn't like how his mom lowered her gaze and acted submissive to this man. Something about their relationship just didn't sit well with Cain. They didn't talk to each other as equals nor as lovers.
'Something isn't right. Mom wouldn't have warned me unless there was actual danger, was it this man that caused my body to be like this?'
Cain had realized that his body didn't have any external injuries. No bruises, marks, or anything to suggest he was beaten or had an accident. This was something deeper, someone had really tried to kill the kid!
"How will he continue his lessons with that frail body of his? If only he didn't drink the tea then he wouldn't be in this pathetic and compromising situation. Shouldn't my son realize that he was being poisoned?"
Clyde practically spit out the word son. So much disgust and hate was poured into the word that Cole had to do a double take. Adelaide was so shocked at his tone that she immediately lost her submissive tone and turned into an angry mother bear.
"How could you say that! Clyde, it's not Cole's fault for being tricked into being poisoned."
"Use the boy's real name woman. His name is Colden, not Cole."
"Like you would even care! You're too busy fooling around with that whore to even remember your real son and not that bastard!"
"Be respectful to Arabella and Oscar. This is my final warning to you, Adelaide. Arabella might not have your title or luxurious upbringing but she is delicate and lovely. "
"Sure, delicate. So delicate that you keep returning to her room every night, I doubt you two sit and have tea together. All. Night. Long."
"Is that disrespect I hear in your tone? Do you really wish to encounter my wrath?"
"The bitch dared to poison my son! She poisoned Cole! How can you be so blind to her crimes?"
Through his new parents' argument, he realized that this body's original inhabitant had died similarly to how he had died. Only, it wasn't his own mother that killed him but his step mother.
'Haa… what a cruel joke the universe has decided to play on me.'
"That's enough nonsense out of you, leave the room you crazy witch!"
Adelaide was so furious that she was practically spitting poison at Clyde. Her built up anger and resentment towards Clyde was seeping through her skin and spilling into her words. With a dreadful look on her face, Adelaide stormed out of the room. Her heels made a -click- and a -clack- with each step she took, getting quieter and quieter until she was out of range.
Sighing, Clyde turned around and looked at the maids. All the maids had stopped doing their chores ages ago, they stopped to stare and shiver in fright at the Count and Countess's quarrel.
It only took one glare from Clyde to shove the maids out of the room.
With their tail tucked behind their hind legs, all the maids hurried to leave the room. Leaving an angry Clyde and an indifferent looking Cole in the luxurious room.
It wasn't until everyone was out of the room when Cole decided to look towards his father. The man was dressed in a nice day shirt and high waisted riding pants. He was also wearing a large amber pendant centered on his broad chest. Looking closer, Cole realized his father was actually pretty handsome for such a jackass. Clyde had black hair, but his was different from Adelaide's ink black hair, his hair was a more blue black color. The Count also had deep, ocean blue eyes. Under the white day shirt, Cole could see toned muscles. His father wasn't ripped but neither was he a fat noble.
Cole was careful to maintain his blank slated face, not daring to show an ounce of emotion.
"Oh? You used to greet me so enthusiastically before, you had that ugly little smile plastered on your face every time you saw me. Maybe there really is something wrong with you and this wasn't just a plot to gain my attention."
'Oh wow that's pathetic. What a dick to his own son…'
Cole was thinking horrible thoughts in his head, but he still kept a blank face. It seemed to be working as Clyde's eyebrows twitched when Cole gave no reaction.
"You aren't going to speak?"
Cole just gave him a glance before returning his gaze to the pure white ceiling.
"Lavender… Is it mom's favorite?"
"Hm? Well yeah I suppose, it reeks of that disgusting smell in here. I don't see why she would use it so much if it wasn't her favorite."
Cole chuckled, letting a small smile creep up on his lips. It wasn't a full smile, no teeth showed and his eyes didn't show happiness.
"Hm... it suits her."
Clyde's eyes showed a flicker of surprise and curiosity in them as he raised an eyebrow. He couldn't remember the last time he actually had a real conversation with Colden. It was something like 2 years ago when Clyde last had a conversation with Colden.
``Father, look at what I drew! It's you, mommy, and me! We are all holding hands and- ``
``- Is this an insult? Why do I look like that, my hair isn't orange and Adelaide's eyes aren't blue. My fingers aren't that long and I have 5 fingers, not 3. This has got to be the most disturbing thing I have seen in awhile.``
He remembered throwing away the drawing and the different colored ink wells soon after.
What he didn't know was that after their conversation, Cole spent hours each day working on his penmanship and artistic skills. He would constantly get angry at his drawings, saying things like how they didn't look real or looked wrong.
Of course, Cain didn't know this either. But he could pretty much guess what their last conversation was like.
"Why would you say that Lavender suits your mother?"
"Father, please forgive my ignorant tone but, why would you care? Are you taking the words of a sick boy seriously? Perhaps my ramblings are getting to you father. I worry for your health, don't let my useless rants influence your mind."
Clyde knew his son was trying to change the subject. Honestly, Clyde was surprised at how different Colden was behaving. The boy seemed to have aged drastically, the childish smile was gone and replaced by cold indifference. He used to speak in a high tone, practically screeching, but now he seemed to have changed his voice to a more melancholic tone.
Perhaps the most shocking thing to Clyde was how Colden didn't try and keep the conversation alive. In fact, their conversation was at a stalemate.
Cole stared up at the ceiling while Clyde stared intensely at Colden. His deep ocean blue eyes were studying the little boy's face.
"Thanks for your concern, but I am fine. I guess this is where I will bid you farewell. Hopefully sometime soon you can stop being such a burden on others and begin to pull your weight. Oscar has already started schooling with Baron Roi."
"I will do my best to catch up to him then. I would have told the maids to escort you back to your office but you have already seemed to have that covered."
"Indeed. I can't say this conversation has been wonderful, at least you seemed to have grown up. About time really."
