Sabrina walked happily to the lunchroom. It was her second day at school and she was excited to sit with her new friends at lunch: Succubina and Dimitri. However, when she arrived, Succubina wasn’t there.
Dimitri looked fervently antsy, pressing his fingers together while alone on his seat.”
Sabrina sat down in her seat. “What's wrong Dimitri?” She asked
“Succubina didn’t show,” he answered, “She hasn’t answered my calls since the end of yesterday, and I haven’t heard from her brother either.”
“Hmm,” she said pensively, “maybe she's on vacation and doesn't have service? I'm sure she'll call when she can.”
“She would have told me first if that were the case. I’ve known her throughout-- like basically-- all my life,” Dimitri replied, finally giving eye contact.
Sabrina tried to hold that eye contact, something she struggles to do. This time felt important though. She put her hand out on the table towards him. Cute boys like him don't deserve to be sad, she thought. Dimitri tilted his head slightly at the response, and awkwardly grabbed her hand with a crushing grip, “Thanks,” He said quietly.
“You're welcome,” she replied, then winced, “You don't have to hold so hard though.”
He subconsciously holds it tighter before realizing her hand was turning purple, “Oh sorry.”
Sabrina nodded, “I forgive you, it's probably just nerves anyway.”
Then it hit her. Oh, I'm holding a cute boy's hand. Her face immediately turned red and she started squeezing her bag between her legs to try to calm down.
Dimitri raised an eyebrow, tilted his eye, and asked “You okay?”
She nodded hard before looking away. “Totally great, yep.”
Dimitri dismissively nodded, peering out the window near his seat. Sabrina followed his gaze, noticing a dove pecking on the window. “That’s odd. We don’t get doves here,” he murmured.
She looked back at him. “Really?”
“Not at all,” He confirmed, “The closest we have for doves are pigeons.”
The dove continued to peck at the glass, beginning to crack it from its sharp beak. Sabrina grew uneasy, as far as she knew, birds couldn't see glass. This bird should've hit the glass while flying instead. Before they both could investigate further, the bell rang abruptly.
Dimitri began to pack his things, then slid something inside her bag before briskly walking away.
Sabrina sighed and walked to her next class. The rest of the day went slowly for her: history and math were subjects she wasn't a fan of. She also couldn't believe herself. I can't believe I held his hand. Was it even the right thing to do? Sabrina then looked into her bag cautiously, making sure nobody else was looking.
Inside was Dave, the plush chicken she had since she was little. She knew that at her age people didn't carry plushies on their person, but Dave has always been there to comfort her when she's been upset.
Looking closer, she noticed a folded pink note. Curious she pulled it out and closed her bag, opening the note.
“I’ll be in the coffee shop at 6:00pm. You may join and sit with me if you want. We’ll be alone like last time.”
~ D.K
She blinked a couple of times. It was an invitation to go to the coffee shop with him. Then she blushed, this could be him asking me on a date, or it could simply be to hang out. She started sweating, growing nervous. She couldn't tell which it was: a date or a casual get together. She hated not being able to tell the difference sometimes.
She folded the note back up and put it back in her bag. Dave is going to be very busy after school, she thought to herself; and tried focusing on schoolwork until school was over.
