The Cure

I wake up to something touching my cheeks; I jump up and am blinded by the light. After a few seconds, my eyes adjust and I see Max sitting in a chair next to me. I'm in bed, where am I? What happened? That's when it hits me, Max is next to me. I jump out of bed and put my hands up ready to fight, I feel light-headed. Just as I'm about to collapse Max catches me. I try to push him away, but I'm too weak.

"You need to rest."

"Let me go." He picks me up and gently sits me on the bed. "What are you doing here? What happened? We were fighting, where's Keera!"

Calm down, she's fine. She's in the medical building being treated."

"What happened?"

"You don't remember?" I shake my head and look down. "I don't even know to be honest with you. You were acting weird, I tried talking to you but you just ignored me. It's like you weren't the same person."

"Oh."

"I'm sorry."

I look up at him, I can see the sadness and regret in his eyes. "Why didn't you finish me off?"

His eyes widen. "I should've waited as the others did; I should've done better to protect you. I never should've tried to kill you." He pulls me closer to him; I can feel my cheeks redden. "I tried so hard to forget about you." He cups my face; our faces only inches apart now.

"Max." I can barely speak, I don't know why I'm not trying to push him away he just tried to kill me.

"I tried so hard to atone for my failure." His lips move closer to mine. "I wanted to grow up with you so badly." He presses his lips against mine, after a few seconds he pulls away from me his gray eyes pierced through mine. "I don't know what it is, but something is drawing me to you. All these years you would always come into my mind." He gets up and walks to the door. "You're still the most important person in my life, Skye."

He leaves the room; I sit on the bed thinking about what just happened. I touch my lips; the kiss replays in my head over and over again, until there's a knock on the door. "Come in."

It's Trinity, she walks up to the bed and sits on the chair with a smile. "I'm so glad you're okay. You had me worried." I look at her confused, hoping she can tell me what happened. "You spent the past few days sleeping, whatever happened to you did a number on you."

"What did happen to me?"

"We don't know. Max was here I take it?"

I look at her surprised. "You know him?"

"Well yeah, he was in the cave with you and introduced himself."

"Oh."

"Keera and a couple of the others went to your village; they gave Luna the virus and she's working on a cure. She said it should only take a day or two, and then she can start sending it out to other villages and the capital."

"That's great. I'm so glad we were able to find out who was responsible."

"Not exactly…the two people that were there weren't the ones responsible, they did have the source but they were ordered to spread it throughout the kingdom. We don't know who's responsible for the orders; all that matters right now are that we're able to get a cure."

I nod in agreement. "What about Rin?"

"The healers were able to slow the spread a bit; he should make it until we get the cure. Those in the knights will get it first, then royals, nobles, and commoners."

So my family won't get it until last. "What about my family?"

"You're a knight aren't you?" I nod. "So, you'll get the cure and be able to take it home for them."

I smile, they'll be okay. The day is slow and boring, Zach and Austin visit when they can, other than those two no one else comes to see me. The sun is setting so everyone's going to their houses or tents. Trinity said she'd spend the night with me, she's sitting in the chair that's next to my bed, and an owl came in a few minutes ago with a letter for her. "What is it?"

"Luna was able to expedite the cure, she's sending the first batches to us, and except instead of giving you yours she said she'll give it to your aunt since you're supposed to be resting."

I nod and smile. "That's great."

"It should be here by the morning. When all the knights get theirs we need to leave for the capital."

"To give the royals their antidotes?"

"No, the event is supposed to be in a few days, the king pushed it back a couple of days because of the virus, but I'm sure if Luna found a cure then everything will be fine."

"Is Max still around here?"

She looks at me with an expression I haven't seen on her. "No, he left."

"What? He didn't say bye or anything, when did he leave?"

"Skye, he's bad news. What happened between you two?"

"You were flustered when I came in."

I can't tell her about the kiss or our past relationship. "Nothing, I had just woken up." She looks hard at me looking for any hint of a lie but I brush her off. "I haven't eaten a lot today; can you get me some food?"

She sighs before getting up. "I guess since you asked." She tosses a small ring onto my bed. "He asked me to give you this, but only if you asked about him."

"What is it?"

"Don't know, I'll be back."

Trinity leaves and I pick up the ring, it's black with red gems in it, why'd he want her to give me a ring? I put it on the only finger it'll fit on, my pinky. It's gorgeous, Trinity comes back with some food, we both scarf down the food. "Do you know him? You're both demons, and you acted as you knew him earlier."

"Skye, I told you earlier I can't say anything no one can. If we did we would be killed on the spot in front of you."

"I understand, when will I-"

"When you're ready. As I said before if you find everything out too early you could kill everyone. You have the power to wipe all the races off the planet; you have the ability to destroy the planet. Then, the only thing to stop you…" She looks down.

"Would be killing me." I place my hand on Trinity's and smile when she looks up at me, she smiles, but I can tell it's fake. We spend a good part of the night talking and laughing about random things until I fall asleep.

I wake up to someone knocking on my door, the person walks in before I have the chance to say anything. I sit up and rub my eyes and am shocked and excited by who I see. I jump out of bed and run to hug Rin, my eyes watering as I look up at him. He smiles and rubs my head.

"I'm so happy you're okay."

"Same to you."

"You cut your hair, how long have you been cured?"

"A few hours."

I hug him tighter and we just stand there in my room hugging each other.
