Consequence {10}

I never did tell you my love, on what happened after I held you in my arms.

You remember how I said that it was a cold night... well.

Your warmth was intoxicating, your touch was all that I could wish for against the climate. Yet a delicate hand swirled above your head, and your startled eyes fell silent; body toppling into the arms of another.

They swooped you as if you weighed nothing, and in your unconscious slumber they had put you in, you did.

How I wished I could be the one to carry you home...

Although her face was loving, it was utterly neutral, for she could not feel as I could.

Speaking in a monotone voice, the angel who appeared from light spoke, lips parted.

"I am sorry Miss Skye, but you have broken the rule of the high spirit- and therefore must face the consequences"

Those dreaded words, meant nothing to me when I looked upon your face.

Even when those words carried a dense weight.

You were worth it.

Her wings arose, shuffling behind her spool of white cloth that dressed her- as did all angels.

I just watched as they took you away, body limp and peaceful in the land of bliss.

My tears had dried against my face, but it did not make them any less heavy. "I understand, I will speak with the High Spirit myself"

As I turned, my eyes spotted a certain dark skinned angel who had walked to your head dangling from the others angels arms. Her full wings ruffled in understanding as her hand traced down from your eyes to your lips.

The touch was so delicate that I felt my own heart speed up. It hurt to watch. Because in that moment, all these memories I am telling you, were pushed to the back of your mind like a secret you wished to hide.

That meant, you had no idea who I was anymore, not any recollection of this night.

She sighed lightly, the feather around her collarbone sighing with her.

"Evangeline" I called out, savouring the last few moments with my guardians.

The look she gave me... I knew she could feel too.

But I left that unsaid as she locked eyes with mine in the most compassionate way; fear shining in those beautiful brown eyes.

"It is time" she muttered, swallowing and swivelling her body to face away.

My own wings stiffened at the indication, at the cold slowly seeping into me now that I couldn't hold you close.

My toes scrunched in the thin layer of snow while I watched.

And then you were gone, taken to lay rest against your bed, where you would wake up the next day as if nothing happened.

When it did Lev.

It did.

And every second was as real as the air you breathed, and hurt, like the ocean corroding the mountains.

But like that, it was natural, and all part of a future that I for one had always been scared of.

But reflecting back on it, I was so young emotionally, still grasping the basis of feeling love for someone, and still so naïve that my affection needed shaping.

So thank you Lev, thank you for letting me grow with you, and like I promised, I will stay with you.

Forever and always my love.

I will explain everything to you in due time, on what happened to me...

Lev had become distracted, as did Jax while they sauntered into the building.

He opened his jacket slightly, having no need for it to be so tight and felt his nose scrunch at the warm air.

Jax followed suit, holding his coat in his arm while stretching his limber limbs.

Gazing at his phone, he smiled devishly. "We still have a few minutes before the lecture starts, let's look at the lab quickly"

Lev stopped in his tracks, swiping a glare toward him, suspicion evident.

"No way, first years arn't supposed to use the labs yet"

Jax leant away from the conversation, his leg stretching a little too close to the door- an arm rushed to fall over Jax's shoulder, pulling him as he was about to wander through a no-go zone. Jax huffed.

"In due time, we'll look properly, but for now..." his speech trailed as he grabbed Jax's phone, shoving it in his face mockingly and shaking it. "I don't want to be late"

Jax frowned, pouting like a little child denied chocolate. "It's not gonna harm anyone, why are you so uptight?" he snatched his property back with pride.

Lev grimaced. Was he really?

Sighing lightly, Lev strolled on, walking past the glass door that within housed one of the best medical training facilities in a university. He could see why Jax wanted to enter it so badly.

And so, he couldn't help the unconscious wonder with his eyes while slowing down his pace to watch it for even longer.

It was a chemically sterile white; rows upon rows of counters housing taps, sinks, expensive machinery... all sorts.

Equipment racks, fridges, hanging white robes that were planted next to the safety goggle box and rubber gloves.

His heart tingled.

A true lab.

Vial racks in each designated seat, obviously ready for the next lesson.

Lev's legs twisted to the door, face smushed against it with a sense of longing in his throat.

"You know you want to Lev..." Jax peeped from behind, that mischievous smirk not misplaced at all.

Oh the temptation...

Screw it.

Reaching for the handle, Lev shushed a wild and slightly giddy Jax behind him, instantly shooting for the door.

"I knew you couldn't resist either!"

Glancing back to ensure no one saw them, Lev swallowed his nerves.

The handle was smooth in his fingers, but Jax was rough, brushing past Lev and side stepping past him through the smallest of gaps.

His eyes widened.

Even the air was crisp, sterile.

"Alright, we can have a look around, but no touching" Lev instructed, secretly closing the door behind him without making a noise; he was surprised it wasn't locked to begin with.

His heart was racing though, nail biting almost at what they were doing. Unlike Jax, Lev never purposely looked for trouble.

He glanced around. "We don't want to break anything- or we'll get sent out faster than you can stalk a girl"

Jax deadpanned, swivelling his head.

"Really dude?"

Lev shrugged. He didn't know why he said that either. "It just came out? I can't help what I say sometimes, you out of all people should know that"

Jax glared to Lev, body leaning against a counter. "I'm not that bad dude" his fingers reached to fiddle with an empty vial. "Why did you bring it up anyway?"

"No reaso- hey!" Lav swatted his hand away, frowning at a smirking idiot who ignored him. "No touching, come on man"

He rolled his eyes, holding his hands up in surrender. "Sorry your majesty"

Lev crossed his arms, stood still and glared sternly.

Jax turned, whispering to himself. "Jeez, so uptight"

They both wondered around the lab, ignoring each others presence and gaping at everything like a child in awe of a new toy.

The emotion of astonishment soon overdid that of nerves.

But that effort was quickly sent to waste once they heard approaching footsteps.

They swore in unison.

Driving himself to duck, Lev dropped to the solid floor; panicking slightly as he crawled underneath the closet counter.

His knees cried out, already feeling bruised at his sudden drop.

Jax on the other hand bolted for the door, body pressed against the wall; just out of sight lines from it but close enough to dash through once they entered the room.

The footsteps thundered closer... but then dissipated down the corridor.

Lev released a shaky breath he didn't know he was holding.

He wanted out. Jeopardising his position in this university was not on his to-do list, and, grabbing his phone from his crinkled bag, he winced at the time.

They were going to be late.

It seems, Jax figured that out faster, already out the door without saying a word. Great. Lev groaned, a hand held to his chest at the relief.

Peeking with just his eyes and forehead, he slowly stood up, sauntering toward the door while wrapping the strap around his arm. "Could have at least waited Jax!" He whisper-shouted to himself, shaking his head at the idiot. He almost got him expelled.

With any human, he would reach the handle and leave the room, but he was Skye's human- fate's prey.

He never even reached the door.

It all happened so suddenly, the ground shook and the walls vibrated.

Something was falling, falling so incredibly fast that solid objects acted paper thin drenched in water.

They broke apart at a single touch.

The ceiling above his head caved in as a singular body came crashing down.

He couldn't hear the impact as his body was thrown like a rag doll across the room. A barrier of some sort encasing them.

Flames, dust, debris covered him next, his limbs pinned to the floor by the tumbling plastering. The lateral structure of the room had been destroyed, a bright light shining through the gigantic gap in the ceiling.

And the cold...

Lev couldn't breathe. An eerie ringing in his ears that drummed out the sound of roaring flames only metres from his head.

A heavy remnant of a snapped counter had trapped his left arm and chest, digging into him so sharply he could feel the blood dripping; glass from empty vials shattered everywhere, tiny fragments like needles to a pin cushion.

Everything hurt, each breath was agonising. Biting his lip, he tried to turn his head, his neck having being cut at the fall. He screamed at the searing pain weighing his body to ash. The fire... the fire... he had to get out. But his body was being crushed, and his swollen lips cried out.

He screamed raw, coughing at the dust entering his lungs.

Anybody! Just... anybody!

Tears stung at his eyes, panic. So much panic.

He yelled again, his voice a desperate whine while he cried for his life. Lev's sobs were uncontrolled and erratic, simultaneously pounding in his chest; body unable to react.

He was shaking terribly, while one free arm shot to the debris trapping him.

His face twisted in pain as he attempted to lift it, spitting blood at the strain when his arm gave way. It fell back to his chest in a heartbeat and jolted him limp.

Lev's vision was barely there, black spots closing in on him; obscuring the light.

Was this the end? Was this how he would leave this world?
