Chapter 46

It wasn't an easy job to spend your youth in a cage full of webs. Carina had learned to accept the fact that she had no way to escape. The boy she had adored forever had broken her trust. No matter where she looked, she couldn't see any light. Not even her favourite Blue dress seemed special anymore.

She was drowning in despair. She cried every night, woke up, ate, wandered aimlessly in the dull mansion and cried. The same routine was repeated until one day, her maid came to give a piece of information.

"He's getting married! To Cecilia Belle!" It felt as if the ground suddenly swallowed her.

"M-Married?" There was a deep ache in her chest. Tears overflowed. She sobbed into her hands, making her maid panic. Her throat hurt. She was suffocating.

Perhaps this was heartbreak? The pain didn't subside, Carina learned to deal with it. But she couldn't hate him. She was weak, she was pathetic.

He was happy, he was glorious. His wife was entirely different from what he had imagined. She was almost his age, quite a fan of his paintings. She understood art. She was sweet and soft, with a voice of an angel. She sang like his mother. She cared for him. In all aspects, she was better than Carina!

Thomas's eyes widened at his own thought. Guilt ate him up. He swallowed harshly. How could he compare them? When had he become a heartless monster like this? Carina was his only light on the gloomy days. She was still a child, it wasn't possible for her to understand everything. She couldn't sing, but she knew to cheer him up. She stood up for him everytime. His brows furrowed in the dark of the night. He looked at his wife's sleeping form. He had to forget Carina. He mentally tried to focus on other things.

He succeeded in doing that for a few years. But one day, his resolve broke when Mrs. Belle announced that Sophia was joining them at dinner.
