At Least He Had Done One Thing Right

When the time came that Jake and Lisa were allowed to adopt the two of them, Nathan said he didn't want it. He was too tied up in his own guilt to believe he deserved a second family after what he did to his first. Besides, he was used to his name and didn't want to change it.

As he tried to explain himself, he looked up at them hesitantly. They had been very kind to him all this time even though he didn't deserve it.

"Are you sure you aren't mad at me?"

She wrapped him in a tight hug. "Of course not. Whether we adopt you or not, you'll always be an important part of our family and we love you. You have a home here as long as you want it."

It was the perfect thing to say and Nathan had to work very hard to hold back his tears. He cleared his throat gruffly to keep them at bay. "Are you going to change Amber's name? I know sometimes people change babies' names when they're adopted because they're too little to remember them."
