Chapter 8: Dinner with the parents

It's been about two weeks and it's Sunday. My parents and Danny's dad wanted to sit down and have a meal together to get to know each other, so they're coming over to ours.

"No! That does not go there," mom is yelling at dad, who is looking at her like she's crazy.

He takes a deep breath, "Where would you like this honey?"

"Just give it to me," she says taking the mashed potatoes from him and putting them an inch from where he had placed them.

He looks at me in astonishment and I just give him a shrug. He throws his hands up and yells, "I give up," then leaves the room.

I walk up to mom, put my hands on her shoulders, and look deep into her eyes.

"Mom, I love you with all of my heart, but you're acting insane right now. It is not that serious," I tell her.

"I just want to make a good first impression on your future father in law, especially since his mother isn't around anymore to gossip with," she tells me with sadness in her tone.

Danny's mom passed away from breast cancer two years ago and it's been really hard for him and his dad.

"I know mom. He and dad will probably end up in the family room, bonding over sports or something anyway."

She slumps her shoulders. "I know you're right, I just don't want to make you look bad or anything."

I give her a big squeeze. "I love you, mama."

"I love you too baby."

I finish helping her set the table while the twins are running around and dad is hiding out somewhere.

The doorbell rings at six o'clock and mom starts freaking out all over again.

I roll my eyes and go answer the door.

"Hi Mr. Roberts, hey Danny," I say giving them both hugs, Danny holding onto me longer.

"Mardrianna, how many times do I have to tell you to call me Pat," he said with mock chastisement.

I laugh and say sorry, letting them in the door.

My mom and dad come to greet them when I close the door.

My dad shakes Pat's hand and says, "Nice to meet you, I'm Greg. Hello Daniel."

"Nice to meet you too, I'm Pat," his dad says at the same time Danny says, "Hi Mr. Munrowe."

I roll my eyes at my dad while my mom gives Danny and his dad hugs, which takes Pat off guard.

"Sorry about that, I'm a hugger," she says with a laugh. "It's nice to meet you, Pat, I'm Sheril. It's nice to see you again Danny."

"It's nice to meet you too, Sheril," Pat says while Danny says, "Hi Sheril."

"Please come in," she says.

The adults follow her into the dining room while Danny and I stay back. He leans down and gives me a kiss.

"Hey baby, I missed you," he tells me, giving me another quick peck.

"I missed you too," I tell him with a content smile.

I take his hand and we enter the dining room, quickly finding a seat.

The twins are talking animatedly to Danny's dad about something that happened during school today. Once they see Danny, they quickly jump up and run over to him.

They each attach to a leg and Jane yells, "Danny, I missed you," while Greg Junior yells, "Can we play some games after dinner?"

Danny gets down on his knees and says, "Hey guys, I'd love to play some games if Anna is okay with you stealing me away."

"Why you always trying to steal my boyfriend from me," I give him a fake glare.

He gives me a mischievous grin and says, "Not my fault he likes me more."

My jaw drops and he laughs, running away. I roll my eyes and we all walk to our chairs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

We eat and laugh throughout dinner and soon notice the twins falling asleep. Mom goes to grab them to take them to their room, but Danny and I volunteer to take them up. She says thank you and tells us we can go up to my room after but to leave the door open.

After taking the twins to their room we go to my room and I leave the door open a crack, she didn't say how far to leave it open.

"Want to lay down and watch Moana," he asks me, laying back against my pillows.

"You know me so well," I say wiping away a fake tear.

He just laughs and pulls me to the bed. I lay down and snuggle into his side, turning the TV on and going to Disney+ to turn on Moana.

"What can I say except, 'You're welcome'. For the tides, the sun, the sky. Hey, it's okay, it's okay, you're welcome," I'm singing along to the song and when I look up, I catch Danny looking at me with love in his eyes. The look he's giving me makes me want to cry.

"Why are you looking at me like that," I ask him with a small voice.

"I just love you," he tells me, giving me a kiss that makes my heart skip a beat.

He pulls away and gives me a dimpled smile that makes my heart skip another beat.

"I love you more," I tell him, giving him another peck and then turning my head back to the TV.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Danny and his dad are getting ready to head out and his dad is slightly drunk, so Danny will be driving home.

"Be careful, I love you," I tell him wrapping my arms around him, not wanting to let him go.

"I will and I love you too," he tells me kissing the top of my head.

Danny's dad is stumbling to the car having said all his goodbye's.

My mom is trying to hold my dad up because he is just as drunk as Pat.

"Men," I mutter, rolling my eyes and heading over to help my mom with my dad.

We are not going to be able to carry him up the stairs, so we just lay him on the couch. We head to the kitchen and she makes us some tea with lemon and honey.

"I like Pat and I think your father does too," mom tells me taking a sip.

"I'm glad you guys are getting along," I tell her with a smile.

"Gotta get along with the future in-law," she says with a wink.

I roll my eyes at her and we finish our tea in comfortable silence. I go up to bed when we're done while she goes to the living room to join my dad on the couch.
