She giggled at their awkward expressions. "I'm just asking. I mean, you guys are all experts in the medical field and you know what they say about talented doctors being akin to double-edged swords. You save lives every other day but if you wanted to secretly poison someone, there wouldn't be a trace of it. It would be almost as if they died from drinking water." 

"Kara," he cleared his throat and berated her—without meaning any of the words he was saying. "You can't say that kind of thing. It's a family dinner and that kind of statement can cause awkwardness." 

"Oh, sorry." She smiled. "I didn't mean to make things awkward.  It's just that your track record…never mind. Let's just eat." 

"Good idea." He glanced in her direction briefly and then at his family. "She doesn't mean any harm. Kara is brutally honest and quite open with what she believes to be true."
