Mom

Flashback:

"Mom, I don't think he is sincere! " She said to the brunette lady. The lady shook her head.

"Sweety! " She said and sat next to her, " you're just 12! You don't know how this works! Dan. He is a great man. You'll love him. He has a son your age. You'll love Andy by the way! " She got up and put on some earrings.

"Andy is nice? " She asked her mother. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all?

"Yes! He is so sweet! And he loves music and art. You'll adore him. "

"Maybe we could be friends," she said hopefully. She had lived without friends for longer than she could remember.

Not that she didn't like people. She just… Was shy. Besides being a nerd did not help get you, friends. She did have her sister. But that's different.

"Where are you going, mom?" She asked.

"Dan is taking me out on a date sweety." Her mom gushed.

"That's nice. Remember the codes?" She asked. Her mom rolled her eyes.

"Yes. If he acts weird I'll text you to ask how you are and tell you I'm doing hunky-dory! I won't be needing this though" her mom laughed at their system.

"Ok. And if I'm in danger I'll text you. Be safe mom. Got the pepper spray?" She asked as her mom began to walk down the stairs.

"Do I need to take that?" Her mom asked. She gave a perfect bitch face in response. Her mom huffed and took the tiny pepper spray.

"Take care. Love you! Call me...? " She said waiting for her mom to finish the phrase. Her mom smiled and they both said together.

"… I'll be there" her mom smiled. She nodded.

She looked up at her mom, who was happy and cheerful as she practically sprinted out the door.

She seemed happy. That's all that mattered to her. Her mom was happy. What else did she need?
