Chapter 6

The night was long. Very lonely and very secluded. Dad was not up yet and the box was blocking every ability I had in my bag of tricks.

Eventually, the metal door creaked open, shining morning sunshine in my eyes blinding me with its power.

Dad stood above me, "Lesson learned Ethan?"

I squinted my eyes and nodded. He didn't like the nod at all.

Snatching me up by my shirt collar, "I'm sorry I couldn't hear you son."

If I used my abilities while his hands were busy then I could get out of this easily, that would be a terrible mistake, "Yes sir. I understand."

A stirring sound was coming from the downstairs, someone else was in the house. Was it Sarah?

Escorted downstairs by my shirt collar, I quickly found out who it was that was waiting for us.

Old Man Johnson.

Dad sat me down on the couch my Mom had picked out one week before her fall. I loved that couch.

Across from me sat Old Man Johnson and Dad, both were peering at me as if I were an alien or a talking dog.

Dad raised his eyes to meet mine, they were dark and cold, "So Ethan, Mr. Johnson had some interesting things to tell me about you and that Jenkins girl. Would you care to take a guess?"

Shrugging my shoulders, "Well, we built a tree house in the woods and as we were coming home we ran into Mr. Johnson. We were having fun. We're kids."

Mr. Johnson began to shuffle in his seat. That was telling me he was uneasy. His heart rate was triple that of a normal person his age and he was sweating profusely.

Dad turned and looked at him, "You're not going to say anything are you Mr. Johnson?"

Just then, Mr. Johnson fell asleep. He was alive but Dad had given him something to knock him out.

As my Dad carried Mr. Johnson out of the living room he growled, "You see what you made me do son? This is your fault."

What was next?

Was I going to be put to sleep and taken into the basement with Mr. Johnson?

Was Dad going to try to find Sarah? What was my next move?

Without much thought, I scanned through the walls of the house to see that Dad was fully down in the basement.

This left me plenty of time to make my big break.

Taking nothing with me I bolted through the front door chased by threatening screams and angry yells.

I had just taken my own fate into my hands.

I'm only ten.

I suppose it was time to go see what Miss Sarah Jenkins was doing and let her know what had happened at my house with my Dad and Mr. Johnson.

"Those of us with abilities never asked for them, they just came."
