Wasting no time, I scanned the driver for injuries while keeping a worried eye on Sarah's Mother. The driver was fine but had no recollection of what happened and why it happened.
That is an ability I have, the short term mind wipe, however, it renders me unconscious and unable to protect myself.
Not wanting to drain all my energy and fall to the ground, I was very thankful that the driver had suffered a touch of shock. I couldn't have another person know about my abilities.
Sarah's Mother called 9-1-1 so we could have some authoritative presence on the scene but she was still staring slack jawed at me while holding Sarah close.
I turned to them, causing Sarah's Mother to flinch, and approached. Sarah broke free from the tight grasp of her Mother and ran to me. She had her hands in the air opened flat.
Smiling, "That was great Superboy, high five!"
I gently slapped her hand, careful not to supercharge my arm, "I did what I had to do right? What is your Mother going to do?"
Sarah looked back at her Mother, "We need to talk to you. Let's go inside."
Sarah's Mother walked in while we trailed her, "You guys have some serious explaining to do."
Standing in the kitchen, I was reading Sarah's pulse rate and blood pressure, it was perfect. She wasn't concerned at all.
As her Mother sat down at the kitchen table, "Mom, you know Ethan is my best friend. He's very special, more special than you could ever imagine."
Sarah pointed to a coffee cup and looked at me, "Do the thing Superboy. Go on. Don't be shy."
This violated every rule I was ever taught but Sarah seemed to have everything under control.
I put my right hand out and focused on the cup, it floated steadily from the table and hovered.
Sarah chuckled and pointed to an empty cup on the table, "Now give me a refill Superboy."
I moved the hovering cup overtop of the empty cup and tilted it so all the contents would empty into the resting cup.
Sarah's Mother was still sitting; her face was painted with half horror and half amazement. I still wasn't sure what she was going to do.
Smiling from ear to ear, "Mom, Ethan needs somewhere to stay. His Dad has done some bad things and he is in danger. Can he stay here?"
With hesitation, Sarah's Mother shook her head up and down, "Honey, he can stay. I need to speak to your Father when he gets home from work but he can stay."
Checking the status of Sarah's Mother revealed a dangerously high pulse rate and an even worse blood pressure, "Ma'am, you need to calm your body now or you are in danger of having a stroke or heart attack."
She smiled, took a sip of coffee, and proceeded to take multiple slow deep breaths in and out. That did the trick.
Someone began pounding on the front door.
The entire door and frame shifted in position behind the strength of the pounding.
Hopefully it was the police or a paramedic or it could be my Dad.
Fear encompassed my body and I hid in the corner of the kitchen out of sight.
"When it's time to help you have to help."
