Chapter 13

Before any of us could answer the door, we could hear the keypad being used. Whoever it was, they knew the password.

Once the door opened, Miss Jenkins jumped up and stood at full attention. Brute placed himself right by her side and whispered, "I am sensing something wrong here."

Miss Jenkins motioned for him to be quiet, "Act like a normal attack dog please Brute."

Brute generically responded with, "Bark, bark, woof, woof. Is that better Miss Jenkins?"

She aggressively patted his head as the Director of the CIA entered the house.

He was dressed in a suit, all black. His jacket, black. His pants, black. His hat and sunglasses, black. Socks, black. Shoes, black. Probably had black undies on too.

He spoke with authority, rightfully earned, "Agent Jenkins, it is a pleasure to see you again. What's going on here?"

Miss Jenkins maintained her attentive posture, "Sir, we were attacked at my home and I felt it necessary to evacuate the area, enter the safe house, and investigate the threat."

The Director spoke again, his voice heavy and clear, "I just left your house Agent Jenkins, that was some impressive work you did there. All while protecting two children. You were trained to perfection weren't you?"

Miss Jenkins knew he was pushing for more information but she would not reveal it, "Sir, the CIA provides the best close combat training available. Thank goodness I paid attention in class and was able to keep the kids safe."

Sensing sarcasm and straight out lying, "Very good Agent Jenkins, may I see the children?"

She knew she couldn't say no, even though she wanted to, "Sir, they are resting but if you insist."

He nodded, "I do."

Miss Jenkins took the Director to the bedroom where the children were pretending to sleep on the California king bed.

Able to sense deception, the Director prodded, "Little boy? Little boy? Little boy! Wake up."

I rolled to my back and opened my eyes to see him hovering over me. I scanned him and could tell he was searching for something, answers maybe, "Hello sir. How are you?"

He didn't speak back to me. He just stared and analyzed my face. He turned quickly and exited the room. Brute followed him closely, just in case.

Speaking to Miss Jenkins, "Agent, good work. I'll be in touch. Keep that boy with you at all times. That's an order."

Miss Jenkins nodded and shook his hand.

Does the Director know things about me?

Would he be back for me later?

"Even the most powerful people fear the smallest things."
