Uncle Duan

Although the house was small, it was sturdily built with bricks. There were two smaller rooms and a small kitchen connecting to the main living room where the entrance is at. The main living hall is equipped with a small table and a few stools. It was not the most glamorous but it was neat and tidy.

The sounds of coughing became louder and Bie Feng quickly ran into the room. The room was filled with scents of medical herbs and a middle-aged man in his late 60s was lying on the single straw bed. He was trying to sit up as he tried to reach out for the cup of water on the table beside his bed before breaking into uncontrollable coughs again.

Bie Feng hurriedly moved forward and poured him a cup of water. He patted Uncle Duan's back, imitating the person in his memories.

Before he woke up in this body and when he was still a sword on the wall, he saw that this was how the madam patted young Tie Cheng's back when he choked on water or when he was coughing. Bie Feng always felt that it was a way to make people feel better.

Giving a surprised expression, Uncle Duan looked at the child who was patting his back.

"Where have you been?"

"Work." Bie Feng had roughly figured out the situation with this child's body from the conversation with Xiao Li. He saw that Uncle Duan eyes were squinting at him even at close proximity and analyzed that his eyesight might be failing.

Bie Feng looked up at the man and can tell that he is already in his elder years. His hair has mostly turned grey and his eyes were wrinkled just from blinking. The old man's pained expression was obvious when he heard Bie Feng's reply.

"Qin-Er...there's no need to work for Old Huang just to earn money to buy my medication…" He paused and coughed a great deal while taking a sip of water.

"Uncle's time is nearing and there's really no more use to prolong it…my only regret is not being able to provide you a better life… and to see you grow up." the old man's lips trembled as he completed his sentence. He was showing the same pained expression again.

Bie Feng's heart ached and he can feel that this man in front of him loved the original a lot. He was unsure of what he could do or say to make him feel better, so he continued to pat the elderly's back in silence.

"Lay me back down... You should be tired from work. There are sweet potatoes on the stove. Eat it and go rest early." Uncle Duan's weakly told him.

Bie Feng lay the elderly down gently and pulled up the thin blanket against Uncle Duan. He looked at the suffocating expression on the elderly's face and walked out of the room, closing the room door.

There was a strange feeling in his heart but as someone who only recently became human, he couldn't understand it.

His body was familiar with the house and he easily found the sweet potatoes on the stove. The sweet charred smell coming out of it was really mouth-watering for a hungry child. He gave it a good whiff - being human sure does have its perks, he thought, as he happily finished up the sweet potatoes.

"I knew this is how sweetness would taste like!" Bie Feng smiled, thinking about how other foods in his memories from his past life would have tasted like.

As a sword previously, there was no such thing as taste buds, so he was unable to experience the joys that most humans could. He has seen people enjoying food in ecstasy so he always wished that he could feel that too.

Finally, he knows the true meaning to be human!

He suddenly recalled that his master was someone who had no expression when eating and he always found it a little sad but funny, like as though he was just eating for the sake of eating. Bie Feng started chuckling by himself once again.

"Ah-Qin? What are you laughing at?" A young voice came from the door.

Bie Feng glanced towards the door and saw Xiao Li walking in the house and comfortably sitting down on the stool like he has done it before multiple times.

"This sweet potato is delicious, want one?" Bie Feng smiled at Xiao Li and offered him the remaining half.

Xiao Li shook his head and asked, "Is Uncle Duan awake?"

"He was earlier. Now he is sleeping."

"How is your head?" Xiao Li gave a strange look as he stretched out to rub off some food stain on the boy's face.

"I can't seem to remember anything..." Bie Feng's body was subconsciously obedient and allowed the stranger that he just met to wipe his cheek.

"I think it's better to let Doctor Chen take a look..."

"I think it is coming back slowly, it should come back in a few days. I don't want to waste money to see a doctor." Bie Feng shrugged and randomly came up with a logical reason.

Xiao Li rubbed Bie Feng's head and gave a big sigh before saying, "Ah-Qin, Me and Uncle Duan were so worried the past few days...and I thought I won't be able to say goodbye to you before I leave."

"Where are you going?" Bie Feng blinked curiously.

"You forgot? I will leave for GongXin Sect tomorrow."

"GongXin Sect, one of the 4 major sects?" Bie Feng became excited hearing a familiar word.
