Maybe a crush

You walked back into the office to see Max leaning against the wall.

"Hey, glad to see you again," Max said, grinning.

"Yea, don't have much of a choice," you replied awkwardly.

Silias handed the both of you the invitations, and explained to you which documents where of most importance.

Did you pay attention? Not really.

Sighing, you followed Max out the door, only to be stopped by a hand on your shoulder. You rolled your eyes before turning to face the villain.

"Listen, don't trust anybody in there. The only reason they'd talk to you is to get something out of you," he said with his eyes narrowed.

Really? Silias had some nerve to say this about you after he had forced you to stay here.

"Sure." You slapped his hand off and walked back out the door.

You trudged down the path with Max who was adjusting their mask. "You know, this is not just an event for just the wealthy. It's more like a gathering for the city's worst. There are a few people that don't really have connections yet, but they will soon enough. I'd like to say that Louis is the worst; he covers up any and every shady event that goes on. Anybody who does go against him is shut down quickly. You could lose your house, your job and even people you hold close," they said with a distant look in their eyes. "I'd love to punch that stupid smirk off his face."

"One day, maybe," you said walking in.

By the time the both of you had arrived, the party was in full swing. The best of the best were gathered here. You could make make out familiar faces. Standing in front of the hallway you needed to go into, you watched all the guests converse with each other. It was laughable; you were so jealous of them talking about what to add next to their collection of art or where to buy the most expensive items while the rest of the city was struggling to get through another day.

So out of touch. So... infuriating.

You would do anything to watch them try to live one day in your shoes. You've already joined the other side. Why not add it to your resume.

Heading into the hallway with Max following behind, you were surprised to find the hallway empty. Finding the room you needed to enter, you opened the door slowly. But before you could step inside, Max stopped you and motioned for you to stay outside.

"Take care of distractions," they said, walking in.

You nodded, all the while picking at your nails while waiting for them.

You spotted someone walking into the hallway, and therefore lightly knocked against the door to alert Max. You looked at the approaching man with a blank stare.

Irritating.

That's what he was. Walking around and flirting with every women he saw despite already having a partner. Not like she was any better.

You had to do something.

For you to come all this way only to be discovered was going to be a pain.

Taking a deep breath, you began to look around. You hoped they'd take you as someone who lost their way instead of someone who was trying steal something.

"What might you be doing here?" A toneless voice came from behind.

You turned around feigning surprise. "Ah, I'm afraid I got lost looking for the bathroom. Not really used to the layout yet." You cringed internally at your choice of dialogue.

"Is that so? Yet you seem to have the seal given to regular attendees," he said, smirking. "If you want, I could help you get around. Get you with the big dogs." Suggestively, he started learning towards you. "I'll even keep your little secret." By the end, his voice was barely above a whisper, his breath against your ear causing the hairs on your neck to stand up in discomfort.

Disgusting.

Before you could answer the man, you heard a loud smack from behind the man. He slumped to the ground, revealing Max standing behind him with a... lamp?

"What? It was the only thing I found. Now open the door so I can drag him in," they said.

You stood on the balcony waiting for the event to finish. You would have been out of here if it weren't for Max and their love for free food.

"I don't suppose you're still here because of a friend?" a silvery voice commented from behind.

You looked around to find a well-dressed man around your age with a pleasant smile on his face that made your heart skip a beat.

"Let's see how long you'll last with the dogs," Silias said, switching his phone off.
