The Killer's Memories

:/ Breaking news, a presidential candidate named Chris Liam got stabbed in the middle of an election parade yesterday. He died after a few hours in the hospital. The culprit has been caught, but he refuses to talk. The investigation is still ongoing, they can't seem to find any reason why Liam died. The cut wasn't too deep, but he suffered a heart failure after a few hours. The mysterious death of Chris Liam has caught the attention of other politicians and the government.

"I saw the news, what if he pointed at you?" I asked.

Jabez laughed. "Dead man tell no tales," he answered shortly.

"Ah, poison pill huh?" I said while looking at the news.

"Yeah. I caught him raping this girl at the dark alley. He's perfect for the job," Jabez answered. "People like him should be punished, but before he does it will be a huge help if he'll be useful for a while."

"How'd you make him put that poison pill?" I asked.

Yesterday, I asked some of my hired men to look for Jabez. They saw him at the parade, talking to the police. He presented them with a fake culprit to close the case before anyone sniffed on us. He got a cut in his leg, he explained that it was part of the plan. I honestly got mad at myself when I see him hurt, I promise that I will not let him get hurt. But now he got hurt and I didn't even do anything to help him.

"The bastard is stupid. Also I threaten him that I'll cut his dick off," he explained.

"So you end up saving this woman?" I asked.

He looked at me with a frown on his face. "That's what we do, right?" he answered.

"Yes. I must say, I'm really proud. You're like a demon but at the same time an angel," I said with a smile.

"How about you? You started this whole bullshit and are still trying to convince yourself that you are doing the right thing," he said jokingly.

"Now that's painful," I said while looking down.

Jabez sighed. "You never told me the real reason why we are doing this, but I trust you all my life that's why I never question your decisions. I just hope we are not doing this for nothing," he said as he opened the door of my office.

"I'm sorry," I said.

"For what?" he asked.

"You got hurt because of me," I said while looking at him. "Yet I promised you before that I won't let you get hurt anymore, I'm sorry."

"It's not your fault, this happened because I wanted it to happen. Do not blame yourself for something that you haven't done," he said as he walked out of my office.

I feel guilty for not telling Jabez the real reason why we are doing this. I don't want him to worry and make me stop. I decided that I will live my life and use it to fulfill my promise to him. It won't be easy, the hardship that I'm about to encounter has begun. I know there's still more, but Jabez is with me, until the end.

(Jabez's past)

I was seven when I started to notice how fucked up my family was, my father works in a company and he rarely comes home. My mother is a housewife, so we always spend time together. I kept on asking my mom about my father, such as why he's not coming home? She just keeps on dogging the question so I decided to stop asking. Until one day my father finally comes home. I was so excited when I heard his car parked in our garage. I immediately run downstairs to welcome him, but to my surprise he's already inside, arguing with my mother. As a kid I can't seem to understand why they have to fight like that, why did my father choose to argue with my mother than to see me? I was so angry back then, I couldn't take all their shouting, so I ran outside. I don't know where I'm going, but I can't seem to stop myself from running. After a half an hour, I felt something stinging my foot. I forgot to wear shoes or slippers. My feet are bleeding, I can't seem to feel the pain. Maybe because I'm too angry that I became numb? I look around and I realize that I'm lost, I can't recognize the place. I decided to sit down at the huge tree in front of a huge house. There's no tears coming out from my eyes even though my foot's all fucked up. I keep on thinking what can I do? I don't want to go home and even if I wanted to, I can't.

"What are you doing here?" I looked behind me when I heard a child's voice. "Who are you?" the kid asked. Why is he talking to me like he's an adult, we clearly looked like the same age?

"None of your business," I answered. I don't even know him, why is he asking my name?

"It is; you are stepping into our lawn," he said while pointing at the gate. I looked at the gate and realized that he was right. That explains the huge house in front of this tree. "You are trespassing; my father is a police officer, we can put you in jail," he said again.

I was so shocked that I immediately stood up without realizing that my feet were all wounded. "Ahhh!" I shouted when I felt the unbearable pain. The arrogant kid immediately helped me stand up, he's holding my arms.

"You are hurt; come inside I'll ask mom to treat you," he said while helping me walk. I didn't struggle anymore because I can't take the pain. I kept on acting strong, but at the end of the day I'm just a helpless kid with nowhere to return.

"Mom!" he shouted. "There's a kid on our lawn, he's hurt," he said while looking at me. I can't stop myself from being amazed when I saw his house. It was so huge that I thought it was a mall.

"Oh, my! What happened to you?" his mother asked. I can't seem to speak, but she immediately asks the maids to get some first aid kits.

"I saw him sitting in the tree," the kid explained. I looked at how his mother treated my wounds. She's very careful and every medicine she puts doesn't hurt at all.

"Wow! It doesn't hurt," I exclaimed. She looked up on me and smiled.

"Of course! Mom is a doctor and she is used to treating wounds and other injuries!" the kid exclaimed. Why is he bragging like he's the one who worked hard?

His mother laughed. "What is your name?" she asked.

"Ja-jabez, Jabez Wilkes," I answered.

"Hello, Jabez. My name is Ami just like what my son said, I'm a doctor," she explained.

"I'm Dristan. Nice to meet you Jabez," Dristan said while smiling at me. He was different from earlier, he's a lot nicer than I thought.

"What happened to you?" Doctor Ami asked.

"I ran away from home," I replied. They both looked shocked.

"Why? You are too young to do such rebellious acts!" she exclaimed. "Tell me what your parent's name is?" she asked.

"Stephanie Wilkes," I answered "Why are you asking?"

"Alright, Dristan honey would you please give Jabez some slippers?" Dra. Ami said. Dristan nodded and he immediately ran upstairs. "I'm going to call her, I'm sure they are worried. Don't ever do this again okay? If you want to go out tell your parents. What if something bad happens to you?"

"Yes, doctor. I'm sorry," I said in a sad tone.

She laughed and patted my head. "Just call me Mrs. Ami," she smiled. "Would you like something to eat?" she asked.

I didn't answer, instead she just smiled. "Alright, wait, here I'll prepare some cake and juice," she said as she walked away. I keep wandering my gaze, Dristan's house is so huge! I wonder why they are so nice to me? I'm just a stranger. Do they treat any strangers like this?

"Here. Wear this," Dristan said while lending me brand new slippers. "That's yours, I'll give it to you."

"Thank you," I said with a smile on my face.

He smiled back at me. His smiles were so comforting, I feel safe and happy with him. It was crazy because we only met, but that's how we started to become best friends. Those were our innocent memories and looking back at the present, I cannot lie that I'm still wishing we could go back to what we used to be.
