She hit the floor with a thud, pain radiating from the wrist she caught herself on. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched Maia and made sure she made it out of the room. Once satisfied knowing her friend was safe, Adara closed her eyes and prepared for the pain she knew she was about to experience.
Never once during the course of their relationship had Adara dared to fight back. Physically, at least. Even verbal arguments took a lot out of her and scared her out of her wits.
But she had punched him. And now she was going to face the consequences.
"How dare you? Do you want to die? Huh?" Gabe pressed, intimidating her more with each word he spoke. "Answer me!"
"No, I'm sorry," Adara pleaded, and she couldn't help but think that she was begging to be allowed to live. She wasn't far off.
