Twenty-One

The drive took longer than it had any right to. Because the location was so far away, Adara had hours to spend just basking in her own misery and wondering when her life went so wrong.

How far back had her life been ruined permanently? Was it when she had first met Gabe or the first time he hit her? The first time she forgave him or the time she let him do it again?

Adara remembered meeting him for the first time. He could wheedle his way into your head when he wanted to. Oftentimes, she wondered how her life would've turned out if he had concentrated his efforts on someone else. Maybe she would've had a future with the guy she was dating when Gabe had approached her that fateful day.

"Oh, Dara, I forgot my textbook in my dorm," Nick groaned. Adara smiled at him. His chronic forgetfulness, though inconvenient at times, was quite adorable.

"Go ahead, I'll meet you in class." Nick gave her a grateful kiss on the cheek, whispering a quick, "I love you".
