Chapter 13

Mihail had walked Avalyn back most of the way to the castle but were intercepted by Lieutenant Theodrid and Sergeant Cian.

Theodrid was looking startling in civilian wear and was incredibly tense. Cian was in his formal uniform, far more at ease than his officer counterpart. Both bowed and murmured greetings to the princess. Wordless, Theodrid handed off a hunting bow and empty quiver to Mikhail. Avalyn felt her mouth twitch as she gazed at it, “Good hunting.”

Theodrid responded with an awkward, unsettling smile. One full of teeth. He trembled hard, then bolted. Mikhail turned to Avalyn, giving her a small bow and kiss to her hand before taking after him. She glanced over at Cian, watching his fellow royal guards bemused. “Did you go out already?” She tested the waters. She wasn’t sure how open Mikhail was with his squad. Or rather his pack.
