Chapter 36

The sun was afternoon-high, wispy clouds drifted with the slow breeze. But Kandais couldn't help seeing the shadow of the Low district beyond the verdant walls of Wolfhelm. She decided to have her lunch on the back porch. Lisa was busy with her own things after lunch, as were the others, so Kandais had the house to herself. Before leaving, Lisa warned Kandais that she was being watched at all times. The backyard was a lagoon of wild-grass swaying off to a creeper covered embankment. More green blades stood in shade around the feet of a gnarled dark tree with splayed limbs and wide tufts of leaves. Frogs croaked within and insects buzzed hurriedly about their business above the tall blades. Kandais wondered which watched her, if any.

For a while she let her mind wander where it would, and just enjoyed the warmth of the afternoon sun. Still she felt cold beneath.
