Chapter 35

Kandais leaned against the up-turned rear seat, her feet awkwardly set on the door's arm rest and window. Her nose throbbed painfully. She'd smashed her face on Danil's seat when the car hit the ground.

Danil dangled from his seat belt above Conir's crumpled form. He moaned loudly and placed a hand on Conir's seat to brace himself. With a groan he pushed open his door. Kandais followed in suit, pushing up wobbly, then out of the car.

Ghouls were coming toward them, perhaps twenty yards away. Kandais hurried to take Danil's arm and heave him up. He grasped the door-frame with his other hand and slowly hooked his legs through the opening. He cursed, undid his seat-belt and with Kandais's help, was able to sit up on the edge.

“The gear,” Kandais gasped to Danil. She breathed in deep then called to Conir.
