Conflicted Feelings

We all gawked at Aeron's ringing phone. I thought the twins were not breathing while their wide eyes were fixed on the phone. I would too if mom suddenly called me at this hour.

Wait, what?

I looked at Aeron with a frown. "Why would your mom call you at this hour?" I asked. "She knew that you two are sleeping over at my house." At least that was what Mrs. Wong thought so.

Aeron frowned too and he looked at Elli. "Should I answer it?"

Before Elli could answer, Aeron's phone stopped blasting its ringing tone. Mrs. Wong disconnected. The twins visibly relaxed. But it rang again.

"Answer it," Elli hissed.

"Don't make any sound," Aeron warned us before answering his phone, sounding as if he was awoken by his phone. "Hello?"

Elli covered her mouth with both her hands. For some reason, she found this situation funny. Aeron glared at her before putting the phone in loudspeaker—which I thought was a bad idea.

"Are you guys okay?" Mrs. Wong said, sounding worried.
