Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Becca-

It was getting dark when I headed home.

There wasn't really a better way to go that didn't pass the house.

I didn't really know what to think.

She just winked at me, like there was nothing weird about someone watching you have sex.

Her face was just, so confident, and sexy.

Exiting the woods, I heard something and looked up to see her rolling a trashcan to the road.

The cigarette in her mouth had an orange cherry glowing.

Dani: ‘Like what you saw earlier?’

I froze and pulled my ear buds out.

‘Wha-what? Sorry.’

She laughed and sat the trashcan straight, pulling the cigarette from her mouth to flick the ash.

Dani: ‘I asked if you enjoyed the show earlier.’

‘Oh, I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean...’

She took another drag and giggled.

Dani: ‘Don't worry doll, I know the risks of fucking in front of a window. I'm messing with you.’

I smiled not knowing what to say as she blew the smoke slowly.

Dani: ‘So what has you in the woods? Going to light up? Hook up?’

‘No! I was running. The greenway is not far on the other side.’

Dani: ‘You were gone a while, how much did you run?’

‘About four and a half miles, I think. I didn't set the app on my phone. I have to run half a mile, and walk half with my foot.’

Dani: ‘You just enjoy running?’

‘I prefer swimming, but don't want to drive to the Rec Center. Our pool has a busted pump and is being retiled.’

Dani: ‘Oh, a swimmer. Maybe you can teach me the breast stroke.’

‘Oh, I, I'm, um....’

Dani: ‘Chill doll, I'm joking, kind of. So you just like working out though? Health nut?’

‘My bo-body needs some work. I had a small surgery to remove a bone spur and kind of let myself go.’

Dani: ‘I'm going to pretend you're joking, because you should be. So no water bottle while running miles at a time?’

‘There's one of those stone water fountains about a mile or so in. I don't like carrying a bottle, it throws me off.’

She took another drag from her cigarette and flicked it into her yard.

Dani: ‘Well, I'm going to go in, I have some work to do. If you ever want some water in a glass, feel free to knock on the door. Play your cards right, and I might just throw in a few cubes of ice.’

She smiled and winked at me.

‘Oh I'm sure I'll be fine, but thank you.’

Dani: ‘Well, maybe you could knock anyways. Have a good one.’

‘Yeah, you too.’

I headed home without starting my music again, simply trying to sort my thoughts.
