1 --- 1

He opened his eyes in a start but there was nothing.

He saw nothing. He heard nothing. He remembered nothing. He felt nothing.

He was void. He wanted to move but there was nothing to move. He felt like he was in a bubble that disconnected him from the outside world.

A tear trickled out of his right eye. He felt the sensation of having an eye but it only saw darkness.

After a few seconds, a little light shone far from him. His eyelid flexed and for a second, he thought his mind was playing a trick on him before his other eye spotted another light and another.

Little by little he found more and more lights before he lost count.

*Stars*

He was looking at the night sky. He blinked as sensation returned to his face and the feeling ran through his body and pain followed it. He tried to scream but no sound came out.

The pain increased and suddenly the stars felt closer than they really were.

His fingers closed into a fist and the pain showed no sign of lessening. He gritted his teeth and there was a sudden explosion at his chest.

The pain slowly faded and he released a long breath he did not know he was holding through his mouth. After a minute of staying still and stargazing, he rolled on his side and he groaned as his body protested.

Slowly he got to his feet. He looked down at his clothes. It was a plain white shirt that felt damp in the chest. He had to squint in the night to see the substance. Blood.

He reached beneath his shirt in search of a wound or opening but found nothing.

He walked forward and tripped over something soft. It was a man, he had tripped over his soft belly. He wore a blue suit with white stripes, he wore glasses and he could see his eyes open behind them.

He looked very pale and very dead. He had no idea what to do. Call the cops? How was he going to explain what happened here? He could not remember anything.

He tried to recollect anything that could have led to this. Panic spread in his mind as he  found out he could not remember '*anything* '.

Nothing. Who am I?

A high pitched whine filled his ears and he panicked more and started to breathe heavily.

He heard a whimper. It took a second to realise that did not come from him. He located the the source of the sound behind him, it was a woman lying on the floor.

He hurried to her side. His eyes were growing accustomed to the darkness. He looked at her.

She was similary dressed to the man, with a white shirt, black jacket and skirt. Her left leg was missing a shoe. Her hair and shirt looked disheveled. He looked closer and saw a large wound slashing open her shirt with blood slowly seeping out of it.

Unlike the man who looked regal in death, she looked like she put up a fight to whoever or whatever attacked her.

She whimpered again, her dark eyes focused on him.

"Nate..... I.....I....am..so sorry." Blood splashed out of her mouth as she talked. She brought up a shivering hand slick with blood to his face.

There was something on her thumb. He extracted it but it was too dark to see but it looked like a necklace.

"T...take it ..run...and hide."

With that, her hand fell to the ground and remained motionless.

He touched her neck and felt for a pulse but it confirmed what he already knew. Dead.

He felt like he should do say or do something but his mind was literally blank.

A light flickered behind him. He flinched and for the first time he actually surveyed his surroundings. It was a dirty alleyway. At one end was a wall and at another end was a road  where another car passed and its headlights illuminated the alleyway for a second. Another car passed but this time it stopped. It was flashing red and blue lights.

*Cops*

Two officers holding bright flashlights emerged into the alley.

"Hey, what are you doing there?"

When they got close to see the scene. They both extended guns.

"Put your hands on your head and slowly turn back." One of them barked.

He should listen to them but he knew deep down that he couldn't. He looked down at his hand, he gripped it tighter.

"Now." The other officer shouted at him.

The woman had told him to run and that was what he was going to do.

Without warning, he stood and ran straight at the policemen. One of them with an itchy finger fired his gun. He saw the bullet slowly coming toward him and he easily dodged it and launched himself into the man who flew out of the alley into the police car.

The other officer was too shocked to move as he gripped her by the uniform and slammed her into the wall. She didn't even give a sound as she crumpled to the ground unconsciously.

Okay. That was a little violent than he wanted it to be and it seemed to effortless. There was a sudden twinge at the back of his neck. *Run* .

He ran out of the alley into the road narrowly missing getting hit by a car. He got on the walkway and started to sprint hard.

He didn't know what or who he was running from but he knew he was in danger.

He ran into another alley. It was blocked by a tall metal fence.

He ran faster and jumped to a wall and bounced off it to the other wall before gliding over the fence.

He continued running and turned a corner and saw another metal fence. He was about to jump over it again before something slammed into his back. He went headfirst into the fence.

He turned to look at his assailant. It was a man in mid - air with sparks on his fingertips.

"That was a warning shot." The man spoke his voice, echoing in his ears.

He did not respond. He needed to escape. With blistering speed, he ran and launched himself at his opponent, who threw another stream of energy at him.

He conjured up a shield that absorbed it. He directed energy from his chest to his hands.

He smacked blinding light into the man's side with his right hand.

The man groaned, doubled over and began to fall out of the air. He followed with an upper cut into the man's jaw.

He didn't wait to see what happened to the man. He jumped on the fence and leaped to the top of the building.

He sensed the woman too late. She punched him to the ground with battering strength. He fell to the ground with a groan and rolled over just in time before the woman's  sword hit where he formerly was. He floated to his feet and dodged another of her deadly sword swipe that missed him by a hairsbreadth.

He conjured up a shield but she broke right through it with her sword. The impact drove him backwards. He threw a ball of fire which she easily batted away and charged again.

He covered his entire arms with energy. She launched herself in the air and brought the sword down towards him. He grabbed the the sword by the edge and ignored pain that ran through his hand. He slammed his second fist into her chest that drove her some feet backwards.

He launched himself into the air and brought his head right on the bridge of her nose. She screamed in pain and went to ground.

The other man was up again. Fury etched in his face. He conjured up balls of fire in his hands.

He held the woman's sword properly and broke into a fighting stance.

"Stop." A voice echoed from above. He looked up to see a man balancing himself on a fence. His long white hair glowed with energy and his stance radiated authority.

"Who are you?" His voice boomed.

He did not respond but assessed his situation. He was up against three obviously skilled willers  and he did not like his odds.

"Did you kill those people in that alley?" The man asked again with slight annoyance in his voice. He obviously did not like that he was not getting a response.

"No." He spoke for the first time since he woke and his voice sounded foreign to his ears.

"Who killed them?" The man asked again.

"I don't know."

"What is your name?"

He wanted to say he did not know but he remembered the woman utter his name in the alley. "Nate." He said. "My name is Nate."

"Nate, I am Victor and you are in my territory. I have absolute control over the affairs in this place. You are going to have to come with us."

"I am sorry. I can't do that." He replied boldly.

"This is not up to you." The man said with  a small grin on his face.

In the blink of an eye. A girl appeared right in front of him with a vicious smile on her face. Before he could even fully register her presence in his mind. She tapped his forehead with her glowing pinkie and his world exploded into darkness.
