Beware, for the evil is nearer than the light...

December 10th 1862

Her words never left me... what did she mean? I stayed in bed.. I had no idea what the time was, probably midnight. Satrena was sound asleep as I laid there.

I listened to the whistling wind and the branches, tapping the window. Oddly, I wasn't tired, I was awake, but I only slept for a few hours... I closed my eyes and tried to fall back asleep, but I couldn't. So I stayed there.. waiting.

A few minutes or hours later, I wouldn't know, I carefully got out of bed. Not wanting to disturb Satrena, I swiftly leave the room. I walked down the hall and into one of the bathrooms. I turned the light one and immediately covered my eyes.

"Shit.." I groaned. Since when were these damn lights so bright.

After a few minutes my eyes were adjusted to the light. I stepped towards the sink and doused my face with cold water. I looked up at the mirror.. what the hell... I reached for the faint black veins showing from behind my ear. Did something bite me? I was so confused and frightened.. I looked ill... what if I got some kind of disease..

A sudden tapping made me jump.. I stepped back and hit a wall as I stared at the window... all I could see was darkness, but I could feel something watching.. reaching at me.. I couldn't move, I felt frozen... What does it want? What is it.. The tapping stopped... I stood there, staring into the pitch black window..

"Nathan?" I jumped at the sudden female voice. I looked at her, Satrena, stood in the doorway. I was hyperventilating at this point, but I couldn't speak. Something stopped me, like a weight on my chest. She must have took note of this and came to me. Embraced me and told my to breathe. I whimpered as tears started to threaten the rim of my eyes.

"I love you." she said, holding me tightly. Her words as soft as rain... broke me.. I couldn't hold back the tears anymore. The tears flood my eyes and I sobbed in her arms. She kept telling me how she loved me.. her voice was so soft and kind. I had no control of my emotions.

After who knows how long I stopped crying. My heart had never felt so much pain before. "S-Satrena... I love you. I love you with all that I am." I struggled. She smiled. Her smile was so lovely.. Then she kissed me. I held onto her, fearing she would disappear. Fearing she would vanish like a ghost.

We broke from our kiss. Then she stood up and offered her hand. I looked up at her then struggled to my feet, taking her hand as I struggled. "Nathan.." she said. I stood somewhat stable. "Yes?" I asked. The pressure on my chest was still there, just a bit less. "You know you can tell me anything. No matter what it is.. I can try to understand." she said in a worried tone, then she smiled again. I forced a smile. "I know, darling." I said weakly.

After a few minutes she started getting ready for her morning shift. I carefully walked downstairs and started the kettle. Nothing wakes me up like coffee. I breathed slow and calmly. After making the coffee I took out my medication from the medical cabinet and drank two of them with my coffee.

Satrena came down the stairs while tieing her hair in a messy ponytail. "Coffee." I said from where I stood. She looked at me with a smile. "Thank you." I smiled, feeling a bit better. She took her cup of coffee. I left the kitchen and took the notebook from my bag. "What's that?" she asked, taking sips from her coffee. "Well, when I went to my brother, one of his daughters... I don't remember which, wanted to give it to me so their mom brought it to me as I left." I said, opening the notebook..

I was met with a disturbing drawing of some kind of mangled creature making my skin crawl.. "Creepy." I said out loud. I flipped to the next page and there the story started. I put the notebook down and walked back to the kitchen. Satrena had finished her coffee and was about to leave. "I can stay if you want me to." she said. "I will be fine." I said. She nodded then hugged me. I held her tightly.

After we hugged she said goodbye and left. I went to my desk, sat down and started reading... This story.. As I read I felt anxious, like I was being watched. What was this kid writing. Then.. I jumped back out of my chair.. "What the hell!" I screamed. I quickly closed the book and put it back in my bag. What.. How.. I paced around the room trying to get myself together. I need to return her book. At least I won't have to wait to long..

What was wrong with her?
