KATY'S POV
A light knock jolted me back from my little moment of peace and quiet. It was Veronica. Her calm presence always gave me some sort of reassurance and comfort. Maybe it’s because she looks after me, though at Dario’s request. “Lunch is ready. Dario wants you downstairs.”
I froze, caught between dread and curiosity. “Lunch? With him?”
She didn’t answer, only arched a brow. “Don’t keep him waiting.”
The door closed behind her, and I stood rooted to the spot, my heart thudding. Lunch with Dario. Was this a peace offering? Had he forgiven me? Or was this another one of his games?
Dario’s ways were as mysterious as they were maddening. His moods shifted like shadows, his actions unpredictable. I could never tell if he was about to draw me closer or cut me down.
Shoving down my nerves, I grabbed a simple blue dress. It felt awkward dressing for him, but still, I smoothed the fabric over my body, my mind racing. Whatever awaited me downstairs, I needed to be ready.
