"Kelsey, my little girl, promise daddy you'll become big and strong."
She took these words but didn't think much at the time. During this time a boy would often visit her home while his carers were away from home. It was almost every day. He didn't speak much and always seemed worried. He would play games with her, and they became close.
"Hey, wanna live with us? You're here almost every day. It would be so much fun; I don't have anyone else to play with." She said to the boy with a grin and building excitement.
The boy smiled sincerely and replied, "I would love to."
Then he looked down at the ground as if many thoughts had invaded his mind and evicted his excitement.
"But I need to protect my sister, she's always protecting me."
Kelsey looked at him with a form of affection.
"You're like a little brother to me too. I'm only a year older, but you're like family to me"
She said with a heartfelt smile before embracing him in a warm hug.
He hugged her tight with his face on her shoulder.
"Thank you," he said holding back tears. "You're so kind, I wish big sis would hang out with me like you do."
"You two! It's time for dinner!" Called out a woman's voice from the kitchen.
"Wash your hands and get ready at the dining table."
They both scurried to the kitchen to was their hands and sat at an old wooden dining table. Most furniture in the house looked to be intricate designs made with different dark woods. The chairs solid, heavy, and painful to stub your toe on, had cushions on the seats to make them more comfortable. Kelsey's mother, with a teddy bear apron on, bought the food to the table. Spaghetti with meatballs.
"Thank you" said the boy.
The mother patted him on the head and smiled with kind blue eyes. She sat at the table, but as they tucked in the front door opened to a small smiling man in a suit with another man stood with him. The boy looked at the man stood behind, stood up, thanked Kelsey's mother and hugged Kelsey before walking to him.
The mother smiled, "Why don't you and your son have dinner here? It's only five in the afternoon." she asked politely.
The man grinned, "We have some things to do, but your offer is much appreciated."
The man in the suit walked in patting the boy on the head as he walked out. The door closed to the mother grabbing food for her husband. They sat around the table as Kelsey ate her food whilst almost lost in thought. Her father glanced at her and turned to her.
"You look a little lost in thought there Kels, you okay?" he said softly.
"Why does his sister never stay with him, he's always so sad when she's away." Kelsey said whilst heaping a forkful of spaghetti into her mouth.
Both mother and father made eye contact in slight discomfort. Kelsey then hopped out her seat and placed her dishes by the sink. She then headed upstairs to her room to which both parent let out a sigh of relief.
Kelsey sat on her bed thinking about how she could help cheer him up.
She dozed off without realising. The night had the casual passing voices of the late-night drunks, so she slept peacefully. Until the loud impact of multitudes of shards colliding with the ground woke her. It came from his house. She peaked outside the window to see a girl beating up two guys, one of which had been sent through the window.
Kelsey's mother entered the room in a panic and looked out the window to see the girl.
"Alex, come with me" she yelled into the house.
The hesitant boy walked out and disappeared into the night with her. Kelsey's father left the house and spoke to Alex's father. Both were armed. A car pulled up in front of them to which Kelsey's mother took her away from the window and pushed her into the wardrobe.
"Kelsey, stay in here, and no matter what happens, stay quiet and stay still" her mother urged.
Her mother then closed and attempted to block the bedroom door to which she was thrown down as it was pushed open. Kelsey watched through a small gap in horror as a man pulled out an already bloody knife and thrust it into her mother multiple times. She watched as her mother screamed in pain. She watched in silence, tears and frozen fear. She watched as her mother took her dying breath. She sat still, eyes locked onto her mother, unable to look away. Struggling to breath, struggling to think.
A man walked into the room, his hair long and the colour of gold. His eyes matching that, but they looked unhinged and maniacal. Kelsey shivered in discomfort causing a small rattle to the old wooden wardrobe. The man locked his unrelenting gaze onto the wardrobe walking up to it.
He opened it to find a frightened, frozen girl. She avoided eye-contact. The man reached his hand out to where she jumped out and kicked his shin. He winced in pain, grabbed her and threw her to the floor.
"You're a feisty one aren't you" he said "You pesky piece of crap, I got a better plan for you."
He waved his hand at the armed man who picked Kelsey up and transported her to the car where she was frozen with fear. The journey felt long. The sound of the engine running. She sat in the backseat unrestrained, but she dared not move. The car came to a halt, and she looked out the window. What felt like the longest journey led to a large, gated mansion in an area unknow to Kelsey.
"This will be your new home, but not the luxury. You will be raised to protect my son, but you will not meet him. I will have people train you, letting someone as young as you die will be a waste."
He chuckled as the gates to the mansions opened. Kelsey nervously peaked out the window to see multiple people in black clothing orderly patrolling the premises. The car slowly entered parking up next to many other cars that looked personalised and exotic. The man stepped out the vehicle and opened Kelsey's door, the driver remained seated.
"Hold my hand child, we will be heading inside now. What you may have witnessed may have been terrible for someone as young as you, but the people you called parents and friends were very bad people. I'll tell you more when we're inside." The man said calmly as his freakish golden eyes looked down on Kelsey.
He held out his hand to which Kelsey hesitantly reached out hers and placed it in his. Her movement was stiff as she stepped out the car. He led the way to the grandiose doorway. A guard opened the door revealing a great room inside. In awe, Kelsey gazed upon the ornaments, artifacts and art in the hallway. It was a complete alien setting for a simple family child. He led her into a living room with a pretty coffee table and pristine white sofas with tailored stitching's. They sat on a sofa and the man let out a sigh and held onto Kelsey's hand as if he was comforting her.
"I hope you can understand what I'm about to say. You poor thing, I feel so sorry for you."
He said in a freakishly kind tone. "I know you must be terrified, but your parents have been doing terrible things, so I had to stop them. They have working with very bad people to hurt the good people."
As he spoke, Kelsey sat with a blank cold expression. Her thoughts racing. Anger, loss, revenge, these are what she wanted. She looked up and smiled, "Thank you, you saved me." She said softly to the man. She smiled at him. He smiled in return and stood.
"Wonderful, you'll be living here from now on, we'll teach you to fight and think quick. You will become the right-hand man to my son." He spoke.
Kelsey nodded and headed to a bedroom where she would rest for the remaining night.
The morning started to her meeting a trainer; she would be taught to defend herself as well as be put through fitness training. She was given set meals and learned how to hold a weapon, training to become stronger, training to become a solider. This was repeated on a schedule with a days break after a few day's. As time went by, she became strong enough to take down their toughest men, agile and quick enough to chase down the nimblest, and efficient enough to wield handheld combat weapons from knives to poles.
Then came the day. All this time she was isolated to one area and had never met the so-called son of the man who brought her here. That was until she was sparring, an unknown boy around her age entered the room. He had short golden hair, eyes as unnerving as his father.
"So you must be the girl. You've been here a year now. I heard you're training. I'm not here to disturb you. Ah I'm sorry, I shouldn't be conversing with the lower class. I'll take my leave.
He said obnoxiously before swiftly retreating.
Kelsey was bewildered by what had happened. She did not care for she was waiting for a perfect moment. Her mother and father were good people to her. She had grown stronger now and was waiting for the perfect opportunity. She wanted her revenge. Then came the day.
One night a fire broke out at the front of the mansion. Kelsey was called to an office room with the man. On the desk it read Mr Baker.
"What's going on?" she asked.
"We have an intruder." he said as men yelled and bodies thudded outside the room.
The door opened to a green-eyed girl. Kelsey's eyes widened to see who it was.
The girl entered blade in hand and pointed it at Mr Baker from a distance.
"Wait, aren't you Alex's friend she said. "Why do you have this girl hostage?" She yelled at him.
Kelsey trembled as she pulled out her knife. She felt Mr Baker's hand on her shoulder.
"Come with me" said the girl, "I'll get you away from here."
Kelsey trembled before pirouetting and slashing the man's palm and running to the girl. The girl grabbed her hand and ran towards the exit. Outside where more people with moltovs. They had set fire to the front of the mansion in an attack. An act of revenge.
They hopped on a motorcycle before speeding away. Smoke from the mansion raising to the sky.
"My name is Kenza, I'm Alex's sister," said the girl. "I'm sorry about your parents, I'm sorry you were trapped there. You're safe with me now."
