An Eye to Spare

"You were told what?" Serenica asked and blinked.

She couldn't help thinking that it could be the last time she blinked with both eyes.

"Or they will destroy you too, not just Sennas. It isn't much of a choice," the prince said, crying openly by now.

"I will…I said I could give my life to prevent innocents from dying. An eye is a big loss. But I'll have to take it. I don't want a single life on my conscience. And I've killed already. No more. No one will lose their life for my sake," Serenica said slowly. She reached out to him, but he swatted her hand away, collapsing onto the ground in front of her.

"I hate myself for ever getting involved with you," he said. "When I think of the pain and loss I have to cause you – I hate! I hate myself so much!"

"It is not your fault in any way, though," Serenica said, a bit annoyed. "Here I am, comforting you, even though you get to keep both your eyes."
