Chapter 14

Renae was being held in a sitting position by Braxton and her injured arm hanging over the table. Jarrod was in another soundproof room as the nurse was extracting his venom.

"You, boy. I need you to hold her in a cradle position and hold her as tightly as you possibly can without breaking her. When she starts moving and jerking, use your strength to keep her still. I'll strap her arm down." Dr. Jones strapped her injured arm to the table as Braxton pulled her into a cradle position.

"Why does she need to be in a cradle position?" Braxton asked, getting ready as he watched Dr Jones grab a pair of forceps and scalpel.

"We don't have a lot of man power to hold down vampires, and her dad is getting some dental work done. When she's in a cradle position, at least one person can hold her down. I swear to god that if you break her ribs, I'll break your neck." He glared as he leaned down over her arm. Before he did anything, he took a deep sigh. "Where's that extract?" He yelled.

"Right here." She called carrying a small vile filled with a clear liquid.

"Okay. Pour when I say ready." He took the scalpel and cut into her arm, only an inch away from the fang. Renae woke up and began crying in pain. Dr. Jones was able to get the forceps down into her arm as he grabbed the very tip of the fang. "Now!" He yelled as he yanked the fang out. Just as he got the fang out, the nurse pured the venom into her wound while Dr. Jones placed the fang into a container and sealed it.

Renaes cries were now screams as her arm began to burn. Her blood bubbling, Braxton, couldn't help but squirm.

"Hold her or get out of here." Dr. Jones yelled to Braxton.

Braxton closed his eyes as he kept ahold of Renae still jerking around. He kept his eyes closed tight, but he could still hear the hiss coming from her arm. His own stomach turned, and he was able to hear Jarrod moan as he walked in. He opened his eyes to see Jarrod holding bloody gauze against his teeth.

-

"While I may not be an expert in werewolf vampire crosses. We need to keep a closer eye on her. She's already developed most of her vampire abilities, but her heart is beating as a wolf. At this rate, I don't know how long she has left to live unless she's forcibly turned before her before her prime." Dr. Jones said to Jarrod as he closed the curtain.

"Forcibly turned? She's almost eighteen. Shouldn't she have been at her prime already?" Jarrod held his fist to his mouth.

"That's the thing. She should have been, but considering she's barely a hundred pounds, she hasn't taken any care of her body, whether it was her choice or not. Jarrod, your body is in its early two thousand while she's only seventeen. Her body is in the condition of a drug addicted twenty something year old. Her brain is the size of a toddler, but from what I've been able to see, it's laughable how much more advanced it is. Her blood rejected your venom and actually embraced the poison from the fang. I did plenty of tests the last time you were here, but we need to run more. A lot more." Dr. Jones said as he guided Jarrod to the chairs.

"Uh, I hate interrupting, but if what you're saying about her brain is true, does that mean she'll surpass the council?" Braxton peeked his head out of the curtain and stepped towards the chairs.

"Well, son, if she does, if the council finds out, they'll ultimately kill her. If she's going to live as long as we or longer, they might want to make her a part of the council. Either way, she won't be happy if they find out that her brain capacity is far above and beyond even fairy tales." Dr. Jones looked to the ground, scared to say another word.

"We can't let them find out. We'll leave blood samples and come back when you need her to, maybe some spinal fluid and urine. Whatever you need. Call me the minute you get it figured out. I need to take her home and continue what the council wanted me to do for her. Apply her to guard duty and make her a part of the school so they could see how valuable she'll be to society. As far as they're concerned, she's nothing more than a vampire that hasn't taken after her mortal mother." Jarrod stood up and walked past Braxton to see Renae sleeping on the gurney.

"For now, let's get her samples, and we'll figure out the rest." Dr. Jones said as he walked in.

-

By the time they finished collecting all of the samples, it was daybreak. They made it back to the school an hour before school started. Braxton carried Renae inside the house once they got back.

"You should get back to your dorm so you can get on a clean uniform." Jarrod said as he grabbed Renae from him and laid her in her bed.

"What about Rae?" Braxton asked.

"I'd prefer her to get some sleep. When she wakes up, if she feels ready for it, I'll let her go back to school." Jarrod sighed, stepping out of her room and cracking the door.

"Sir... Do you mind if I stay here with her?" Braxton bit his lip.

"Why?" Jarrod asked before walking down the hallway into the kitchen.

"Well... I feel a connection to Renae. I can't explain it. I feel weird being away from her, and I want to be there for her when she wakes up. Besides, you have to report to the council around noon, right? I can stay with her and just tell my parents I was working with the career fair since today is set up." Braxton followed right behind Jarrod.

"Have you had any serum deposits yet today?" Jarrod asked, holding out two pill capsules."Besides, how did you know I reported to the council at noon?"

"It's not hard for people to hear your conversations when you like to leave your windows open." He tried to hide his smirk.

"You know what? Fine. I'll let you stay with her for the day. I'll let your teachers know I have you working on an extra credit assignment for me. If she wakes up, tho, you call me. I need to get ready for work. I used up all my personal days the first time she got hurt." Jarrod sighed.

Renaes Pov

I woke up in my room. I looked at my arm, still burning but covered in bandages. I looked around the room, as empty as always, but lit from the light shining through the window. I looked at the clock and saw it was one o'clock. Trying to understand what was going on, I pushed myself to the edge of my bed and placed my feet on the floor. Before I could try to stand up, I almost fell over feeling my ankle ache. I looked down and saw it covered in bandages as well. I got up and held up my ankle as I managed to hop into the bathroom. I grabbed a washcloth and wiped away all the dried blood that I could see smeared over my arm and legs.

"Disgusting. They couldn't have cleaned up a little?" I moaned to myself as I rinsed the blood covered wash cloth.

After I squeezed out all the water, I tossed it into the laundry basket and dried my hands. When I looked up at myself in the mirror, I screamed. My eyes had turned to a while color. My pupil was the only color my eyes held as they were a small black.

"What's going on? Rae?" I heard Braxton in my room. I opened the bathroom door to see him standing in my doorway.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"Y-your eyes?" He asked, backing up.

Narrators POV

Renae looked back into the mirror, seeing Braxtons horror, her own fear errupting.

"Where's my dad?" Renae asked as she stumbled back into her room.

"Uh... I-I'll g-go.... call." Braxton ran out of her room as fast as he could and grabbed the phone. He dialed Jarrods office phone.

"Mr Riley speaking. How can I help you?" Jarrod answered the phone.

"S-she's awake. H-her eyes. White!" He yelled over the phone.

"Braxton? Is that you? I can't hear you. What's going on? Is Rae awake?" Jarrod said over the phone. Braxton ran back into Renaes room, still holding the phone.

"Her eyes are white!" He yelled as he saw Renae fall onto the bed.

"What does it mean?" Renae asked, looking up to Braxton. Before a split second, Jarrod was running into the room, pushing Braxton against the wall in his rush.

"Rae, are you okay?" Jarrod asked, sitting on her bed next to her, helping her to sit.

"I feel fine. My arm burns, and my ankle is sore. What happened to my eyes?" She asked, rubbing her arm lightly over her bandages.

"Does she... is she-"

"Let's call Jones and just ask him real quick before we jump to conclusions." Jarrod said, grabbing the phone from Braxton.

-

"Okay, thank you so much." Jarrod sighed from relief. "It's just her reaction to the venom. Her body must not have dispelled all of it. It's a normal wolf reaction apparently to vampire venom."

"Oh... that's a relief." Braxton grabbed his stomach.

"So, what happened? I remember being at the hospital. I don't remember much, tho. When'd we get home?" Renae asked as she tried to stand up again.

"We got back about sixish hours ago. We figured it best to let you sleep." Jarrod grabbed her arm to try and help her walk.

"I don't need help. I can hop just fine. I'm not that broken. I just want some food. I'm starving." She shook her arm out of Jarrods grasp.

"I'll go make you an egg sandwich. With mayo, right?" Braxton asked.

"Yeah, that sounds like heaven." Renae smiled, her stomach growling.

"Just let me help you to the door, and you can grab onto the wall and hobble to the kitchen." Jarrod groaned, grabbing her arm again. She shook her head in defeat as he helped her to her door.

-

Six weeks had passed. Braxton spent every day following Renae around. He even managed to convince Jarrod to switch his schedule to match Renaes. Her injuries had healed, and she was back on campus security. It was the only time she had managed to be alone. That and going to see Dr. Jones was for a checkup every week, was the only time she felt normal. It was twelve twenty-five, and her shift was almost over.

"I'm so tired." Renae sighed as she sat on the roof of the gym and glanced down.

It was the best place to observe the dorms. Of course, on rare occasions, she'd catch one or two night students trying to skip class, but she never actually had a chance at meeting any of them. She looked at her wristwatch and smiled as she jumped down onto the bed of hay right below her. She winced as she landed on her ankle. It was still sore occasionally, but she refused to tell anyone about it.

"James, where are you?" She called over her walkie-talkie.

"You don't need that. I'm right here. I was just about to tell you to go home. Night students are getting ready to head out anyway." James said to her before he pulled out his phone. "I got a hot date anyway. I'll see you tomorrow in class." He smirked, turning around.

"See you tomorrow." Renae said back as she headed home. After she got home, she was quick to get changed and laid in bed.
