I was tired of this. I faced the metal fireflies of death and moved away from the teachers. I made no small strides. I loomed closer and closer. A stray bullet nicked my left shoulder. I winced but did not stop. At the closest intruder, I stood dead center in front of him. He began using me like cover without ever realizing I was a human being. He shot around me without acknowledging me.
No one spared me from an invisible existence... The next time he tried to fire, I grabbed the heated barrel and tore it from his hands. His eyes bulged at the realization of an enemy so close.
"Now you see me?"
I pulled the gun in my hands back and swung the butt of his AR, landing a blow to his face. I let go of the barrel. My hands were already blistering from the heat. I found my next potential death. Another terrorist had seen his buddy fall. He had no idea what from, though.
I ran at this ass hole. I was angry that I couldn't be seen. Pissed that no one would acknowledge me. I was devastatingly furious that no one would even try to kill me.
"FUCK YOU ALL FOR IGNORING MEEEE!"
I leaped up and landed both feet on the side of the oblivious man's face. He was down and out. His weapon was next to him. My eyes trailed over to the trigger. My mind was blind with rage. I wanted to kill this man. He was causing harm to others, and he had the balls to ignore me? I reached out for the metal death object.
"Jeanie?!"
I stopped. That voice is the girl who kicked me. I looked up. The nearest terrorist was aiming his gun at the direction of the voice. Another flaming junk pile landed a hit on someone further back.
"Jeanie?! Where are you?"
"What the hell? Can't she hear the gunfire? Get away from here..."
I muttered to myself. The man that was tracking her voice began to follow it. He intended to find her. Again, someone was ignoring me. I began a brisk walk toward the stalker.
"HEY! ASSHOLE!"
My voice fell on deaf ears. Why was I even trying? I sped up my pace to a light jog. He was about to turn the corner.
"JEANIE! ANSWER ME!"
The red-haired girl that kicked me, had appeared from around that same corner. He took aim at her. He began to pull the trigger. But, not before I could kick the gun into his face.
The gun fired. A shot went through her hair. She had attempted to crouch down in fear of the sight of a gun pointed at her.
He was rousing from his fall. I kicked him in the stomach for good measure. Again, an assault rifle was within my reach. I picked it up without hesitation. I took aim and landed three out of seven shots in one man's chest. I found the switch and set the gun to semi-auto. I fired three more shots. One miss, two hits on another terrorist.
There was only one man left in view. Yelling could be heard from further away. Five more suited up men, stealthily emerged from behind a building nearby the man that I had thought was the last.
One man stood out. He was larger than the rest and he was pointing out spots of interest to the others. My next target was this man.
*Click*
My gun was out of ammo. I threw it down. I charged at the largest man of the group while ignoring any nearby gunfire. His size was more than twice mine. It did not deter me. I leaped up onto the edge of a table that was used as a barricade. I jumped at him and landed both feet square in his chest.
He recoiled back nearly two feet before recovering.
"Tha hell was that? Watch out, boys! There might be some UNIQUE that can hit us all the way back here."
"... i hit you..."
...
"I knocked you back..."
...
"DON'T YOU FUCKING IGNORE ME!"
I stood up with a fire I had never known before. I grabbed the collar of his tactical vest and pulled myself up while using his knee as a step. I wrapped my hands around his neck and simply said,
"Remember me, or nothing at all..."
"Boss! What's wrong?"
"You alright, boss?"
"Why are you leaving yourself open?"
His comrades called out.
Even they didn't see me literally standing on and choking their boss.
I was beyond livid...
"eeerrrrRRRRRRAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!"
I let out the loudest yell that has ever left my mouth. In doing so, I felt like something else happened. I watched as the eyes of the man in my hands began to roll up into his head. The gunfire stopped. I heard bodies hit the ground. I fell with my prey.
I assessed my surroundings. All of the terrorists were down. The only voices I could hear were the teachers at the far end of the battle. I saw the red-haired girl unconscious against a wall. Whatever happened, I think she got caught up in it.
It was over...
And...
I was still alive...
I let out a giggle. It was uncomfortable. I covered my mouth with my hand. The volume of my laughter began to climb. I was flat-out laughing. Why? This situation was... terrible. I lived through the middle of a dangerous firefight. I shot people! What is so funny?
*BOOM*
A crash landing behind me stopped my laughter. I turned to see the Principal. He left a dent in the concrete he landed on. His pressure was immense. It was hard to keep my eyes on him. It was hard to stand, breathe even!
Everything went black.
I awoke to a familiar ceiling. Not in the sense that I have awoken to it before. It was a unique popcorn ceiling in the Principal's office. I haven't seen anything like it anywhere else. I sat up.
"Oh, you're awake. I'm sorry if my presence was a bit much. I don't get much practice nowadays."
"What?"
The man was rugged. He had a ponytail just like the Vice Principal, only blonde. His stubble was more obvious than Mr. Halloway.
"You have been asleep for over a day now. How are you feeling?"
"I was asleep in your office?"
"Well... Your power doesn't make it easy to get you treatment. I tried to give you to another teacher and he treated me like I was insane. 'What do you mean? Take who?', he said. I took it upon myself to see that you got treated and not forgotten."
What he just said...
I walked over to him.
"Hold on! Take it easy."
I stopped in front of him. He is tall. The top of my head wouldn't even reach his chin.
"What did you say?"
I barely managed to speak.
"I want you to take it easy. You've been..."
"No. Before that."
My eyes didn't even look at his. They were starting blankly at the center of his chest.
"Well... Uh... I said I didn't want anyone to forget about you so..."
Tears began to well up. I couldn't hold myself back. I leaned forward until my head was against his chest.
"Hey, are you okay?"
He placed his hands on my shoulders. He said he didn't want to forget about me. Someone in this world WANTS to remember me. I felt so stupid crying against his chest.
All the same, I felt more relieved than any other time in my life.
