Inevitable!

Emily got out of the bathroom covered in a towel. She blew her hair dry and wore her underwear before completely taking off the towel. That was when she noticed something at the back of her waist through the mirror. It looked like a birthmark which was weird cause it wasn't there before today.

She squinted her eyes to have a proper look at the mark. It was faint but she managed to see it. It looked like two bat wings spread out. She tried to see if it would disappear if she rubbed it but it didn't so she shrugged it off. Surely it wasn't anything to worry about, right? She wore her dress and her boots and wore her jean jacket over.

After making sure that she hadn't missed anything, she picked up her bag and went downstairs to make her breakfast. When she walked into the kitchen, she surprisingly saw her father, Giuseppe sitting there.

"Wow! Twice in two days", Emily said. "Should I be worried or something?".

Giuseppe however didn't answer and just chuckled weakly.

"I already made you breakfast", he said.

"Ooh, thanks"

"No problem", Giuseppe said weakly.

Emily looked at her father and saw his gloomy face. She brows immediately creased together in worry.

"Are you sure you're okay?", she asked.

Giuseppe let out a sigh and said, "Come over here. Sit down".

Now Emily was only getting more worried. She walked over and took a seat next to her dad. Giuseppe took her hand in his and said, "You know I'm your father, right?".

It was a rhetorical question, but Emily nodded either way.

Giuseppe continued. "As your father, it is my job, my responsibility to protect you. And to do that I have to keep certain things from you. Now I don't really like lying to you and I don't want you to think of me as a liar but I thought I had to do it to protect you. Now ou're growing up so fast and I'm afraid that I can't continue to keep the truth from you. You've been getting suspicious of your mother's death for some time now. I don't know how it started but I can not tell you the the truth just yet".

"But why?", Emily asked. She didn't know what was so hard about it that her father wouldn't tell her the truth. She wanted to be mad at him but for some reason she couldn't

"Because to tell you the entire truth, I would have to tell you something about yourself that not even you know about yet. Truth that can hurt you so much that you might feel certain things", Giuseppe said as he started to trail off. "Uncontrollable things. Strong, uncontrollable things", he added, his voice more weaker now.

"Now I know I will have to tell you soon...",

"You don't have to tell me", Emily cut him off. If whatever her dad was hiding from her was as bad as he was making it sound, then she didn't want to know. But still she couldn't help but get more curious. She couldn't help but think, just what was her father hiding?

"No", Giuseppe said. "I can't keep it from you for much longer. I mean very soon, you're going to be turning eighteen, I will have to tell you soon or you're just going to find it out the hard way. It's inevitable", he shook his head and looked at his daughter.

"But I can't tell you now. Now just yet. We'll both have to prepare ourselves first - you much more than me - before I can tell you everything".

Emily nodded in understanding. If the truth was that bad and also inevitable, then she really needed to prepare herself mentally first - maybe physically too - like her father said to.

"I have to get going", Giuseppe said with a sniffle as he looked at the time on his watch. He was the town sheriff and the station wasn't going to operate on itself.

"Okay", Emily said. "Wait, aren't you going to give me a ride to school?", she asked.

"I heard Kyra's going to school today so you can so with her", he said. "I can still drop you off if you want".

"No it's okay", Emily said.

"What about Cash? Won't he be coming to school?", Emily's brows creased together as she asked.

"I don't know, I think he caught a cold or something", Giuseppe said, although it was a lie since he knew that Cashel wasn't sick but was going through something else.

With that said, he kissed his daughter's forehead and quickly left for the station. Emily soon finished her breakfast and was also ready to head out. She got out, locked the door and walked across the street to the Michaels family household. She was about to knock when the front door opened, revealing both Kyra and her father, Mr. Hartley Michaels.

"Emily", Hartley smiled at Emily as he walked out the door with Kyra in tow.

"Good morning, Mr. Michaels", Emily smiled back as she greeted him.

"It's only Mr. Michaels at school", Hartley said as he patted Emily on the shoulder and walked to his car. "You two should get going, else you'll be late", he said as he got into the car.

Just rolled her eyes and said, "Say that to yourself".

Hartley just ignored her, he started the car and soon drove off.

Emily looked back at Kyra. Kyra raised the keys to Cashel's truck, shaking it and making it jingle a little. "Ready to go?", she asked while making her towards the truck. Emily just nodded and follow.

She climbed into the passenger seat as Kyra sat in the driver's side and started the car. Soon, they were driving off in the direction of the school.

After a few minutes of driving, Kyra noticed that Emily wasn't her usual self. She had been trying to make conversations with her blonde friend when the blonde only gave simple and short replies. Emily also seemed to be distracted and contemplating about something.

"Everything alright?", Kyra asked, taking her eyes off the road only for a second to look at her friend.

"Yeah", Emily answered.

"You sure? You look really distracted", Kyra asked, worried about her friend.

"Yeah, fine", Emily tried to reassure her.

"If you say so", Kyra obviously didn't believe her but she didn't want to pry so she turned on some music and continued to drive.

Soon, she entered the parking lot of the school. She found a spot where she parked Cashel's truck. The two then got out of the car and started to walk through the fairly large parking lot right after Kyra locked the door.

The parking lot was filled with almost all kinds of highschool kids doing their own kinds of things. There were the hip-hop kids, the theater kids, the skater kids, Zane and the football kids, the nerdy kids, Katherine and the cheerleaders et cetera. The parking lot was really lively.

Katherine waved at Kyra and Emily went she saw them. Kyra waved back since she was the only one who noticed her and Emily was still in her own mind to notice. Emily didn't even notice one of the skater kids who was fully concerntrated on the skateboard coming her way. They would have crashed into each other had Kyra not pulled Emily who let out a yelp out of the way.

"Watch where you're going, dickhead Ryan", Kyra yelled at the skater boy named Ryan.

"Sorry", he apologized without even looking back.

Kyra sighed and let go of Emily. "Seriously Em, are you okay?", she asked, now more concerned.

"...Yeah", Emily nodded.

"No, Emily. You're not okay. You've been out of it all the way here", Kyra said, almost yelling it out. "What is going on?", she asked.

"Nothing is going on. I'm okay", Emily said, trying to reassure Kyra.

Kyra clearly didn't believe Emily. She could literally smell the anxiety that was coming of Emily back in the car. But Kyra didn't want to force her to tell her because she too was keeping secrets so she decided to not bother about it anymore and kept walking.

Carter who had also just parked his car, got out and waved at Kyra before running over to the others on the football team. Kyra just nodded to acknowledge him.

"Since when did you two become friends?", Emily asked. She found it weird cause they had all grown up together in the same town but Kyra and Carter had never been friends.

"Oh we're not friends. We're just a little more... acquainted now", Kyra said.

Emily nodded and didn't question her.

"Hey, you didn't come to school yesterday. I also came over last night, your father said you weren't home. Where were you?", Emily suddenly asked after remembering.

"I 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 have to kill you if I tell you. Do you wanna risk it?", Kyra suddenly asked with a serious tone.

"I guess I have to say goodbye to my dad then", Emily played along making Kyra chuckle.

Kyra was about to make another joke and then come up with an excuse when her eyes fell on the figure of Jason who was now able to walk freely in the sun because of his new daylight ring. A smile immediately appeared on her face.

"I'll talk to you later", Kyra said and immediately jogged towards Jason not even listening to Emily's protests.

"Hey, wait. Kyra", Emily tried to call her but Kyra was already gone. All she could do was sigh to herself.

"Hey", a voice suddenly said behind Emily, making her jump in surprise. She immediately turned around only to see Bryce who had a boyish smile on his face.

Emily immediately let out a sigh of relief. "Hey, you scared the hell out of me", she pouted.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to", Bryce immediately apologised.

"No, it's okay", Emily said.
