Cha Sungho. He's 28 years old. My closest friend. Actually, he's my only friend which is a bit sad if you think about it. And he's my cousin. Which is sadder. I think.
You see, he owns a business that's close to the apartment complex that I live in. A café. A cat café to be exact. 'Candid Calico Café' he called it. He also sleeps over at my place most of the time claiming that he got lonely at home so we see each other all of the time.
You can't imagine the look on his face when he entered the house and saw a child in the living room.
It was around 9 AM in the morning when he arrived. Yejun and I were sitting on the couch watching TV as we just finished eating breakfast.
I heard keys jingling from the other side of the door and humming.
"Jihoon-ie~," He said as he opened the door "Hyung's home!"
I leaned back to get a view of the doorway "Oh hey, you're here. Good morning" I said. "Did you have breakfast ye-" his words were cut off when he saw the distracted child beside me. He looked at me in confusion "W-Who's that?" he asked. I was about to respond when he cut me off "Oh! Is he a friend's kid? Oh wait you don't have any other friends"
I smiled, obviously looking irritated "Hey! What makes you think I don't have any other friends? I am offended" I put my hand to my chest and exaggerated a gasp.
"Oh stop. You and I both know that you don't have enough energy to even talk to a person" He retorted back. I opened my mouth to speak but closed it again realizing he was telling the truth. "Yeah, you're right," I said.
"So...who is he?" He asked, gesturing to the little boy who was now looking at both of us. "Oh. Um...haha about that..." I awkwardly laughed and pulled Sungho to the kitchen.
"Well?" Sungho raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. I averted my eyes as he continued to stare at me, waiting for an answer. "I kinda just.....picked him up?" I said. He looked even more confused "Picked him up? What do you mean? Picked him up from where?"
"The dumpster by the alley.....?" I hesitantly said. We stood in silence for a while while he processed what I said.
"You did WHAT?!" He shouted. I immediately put my hand over his mouth and shushed him.
"Don't shout! Yejun might hear you and he gets scared easily" I told him. He replied with a nod and I took off my hand from his mouth. "You did what?!" He repeated but quieter this time. At least he's considerate I guess.
"Look, he was crying when I found him. His mother abandoned him and told him she would come back. She gave the child false hope. What was I supposed to do? Just leave him there to die? He's 4 for Pete's sake!" I explained anger rising to my chest. Thinking about what his mother had done to the poor child, enraged me.
"Okay, okay. We'll figure this out. Calm down" he said. He leaned against the counter as we sat in silence, thinking. He glanced over his shoulder and to look at Yejun who's eyes were still focused on the TV.
Sungho let out a sigh and looked at me "You're right" he said "What kind of mother would just leave her child alone in a dangerous world" he muttered as he shook his head in disappointment.
"An irresponsible one. Why have a child when you know you couldn't take care of one?" I answered. He looked back again and continued to observe Yejun.
"Want to talk to him? He's really adorable" I told him. He chuckled "I can see that," he said as he watched the little boy giggle at a scene from the show he was watching.
"Come on," I said as I nodded in Yejun's direction. We began to walk towards Yejun and I assume he heard us because he stopped watching and turned his head to look at us.
"Hey Yejun-ah, this is Sungho. He's my cousin" I said and nudged Sungho forward.
He bent down to meet Yejun's height "Hi, little guy! My name's Sungho! But you can call me Sungho-hyung or just Hyung, okay?" he said with a smile on his face.
"H-Hi..." the little boy said while playing with his hands, not meeting Sungho's eyes. "He's very shy," I told my cousin who hummed in agreement. "Hey, don't worry I'm not gonna do anything. I'm very friendly" Sungho tried again.
This time, Yejun slowly looked up and started to speak "I'm Y-Yejun..." he said in a small voice. Sungho looked like he was holding back a squeal "Oh my god he's so cute!" he whispered to me.
"Have you guys eaten yet?" He turned to me and asked. "Yeah. We just finished a few minutes before you came" I replied. "That's too bad. I was thinking of inviting you to the café for breakfast" he said.
I looked at the clock that was hanging on the wall. It was currently 11:13 AM.
"I mean, we could still go for something light to eat I guess? I also need to shop for Yejun's things anyway" I told my cousin. I turned to face Yejun who was just watching us "Wanna go out kid?" I asked him.
"Where?" he asked. "We are going to your Sungho-hyung's café. There are lots and lots of kitties there!" I exclaimed. His eyes sparkled in wonder as he heard the mention of the cats.
"K-Kittens? I-I wike kittens!" he said as he smiled brightly. "Really now? Then you will definitely like my café. It has all sorts of cats! They're all friendly! I'm sure they would love to have a new friend" Sungho said which made the little boy even more excited.
"W-Weally?! J-Junnie wants more fwiends!" he exclaimed obviously very thrilled.
"Well then, what are we waiting for?" I said and continued to pick him up "Let's go!"
